Phillip, the key on going locations popular within "package tourist people" is to go when the annoying tourists are not there Also I find most of these locations way too hot on summer time. Additional benefit is that travelling is very cheap, you can get hotels as cheap as 15EUR/night etc. I have never been any of these locations at "prime time", but during October/November or February visited many Mediterranean islands. I have been to Crete several times, once in spring and twice in summer if I remember correctly, my father and I were camping on the beach in an area were this was accepted,so no package tourists bothered us
The last time was around easter and it was raing for one week straight, not the best holiday I ever had.
Split Rock Lighthouse has been on my list of places to visit for many years now. Well, I finally made the trip and despite temperatures as low as -12F, it was everything I hoped for. I was greeted by a decent sunrise. The a7R performed flawlessy in the cold.
