Yeah, the lighting wasn't the greatest and I don't have a lot of experience shooting fast moving toddlers...lol I'm going to say that this one was probably user error. Going to look into AF Tuning. Never messed with it. Googled it and found Nikon's instructions but is there a better way? Thought I might have seen a method here on FM somewhere?
This may or may not be helpful to you, but I had your lens fine-tuned to +18 on my Df and +13 on my wife's D600. I tuned with both FoCal and the Dot-Tune method and got the same results. In my opinion, on a lens like this with such a thin DoF, spending the time to fine-tune is worth the effort even if the difference won't be night and day dramatic. Dot-Tune really only takes a few minutes to do and at least you can kinda rule out that aspect if you experience soft images. I think the image of the kid is slightly soft due to missed focus ... it appears just a tad front-focused if you were aiming at the eyes.

You need an ND filter there, buddy
I have tons of 77mm ND’s/CPL and I ain’t purchasing any 72mm either.
Yes, I have an adapter but it’s a 67 to 77mm adapter. Nikon keeps changing filter thread dia’s and I’m sick of chasing them.
So yeah, screw the 1.4 for bright sun shots

You can't make excuses for shooting @ F2.2 when your the one who says the lens should only be shot wide open! Imagine how much better that shot would have been at F1.4.

I bought a 72-77 step up... and just leave it on all the time with a 77mm NC. I have a 77mm ND in my bag if needed. Makes for easy switches...
the image looks fine for the natural light conditions, your proximity to the subject and the camera settings. You arent going to get magic with that combination unfortunately.
This lens does not shine near MFD focusing, the closer you get wide open then the more you start to see softness wide open. get back some remain wide open and the images will get sharper even when zoomed in @ 100%.
I learned this real quick with the 58 and i photograph a lot of children.
I still get OOF images all the time so I chimp a lot.
I have learned this lens loves soft light especially late afternoon. mid day light or night light with no off camera flash or strong constant lighting source produces poor, soft, bland images.
to sum it up, use quality lighting be it natural lighting or off camera lighting.;
When things slowed down at my reception this Saturday I took some time to test my 58 wide open. I don't ever shoot the dance floor wide open, so these shots aren't about technique. It's just a good stress test for the 58. Please don't comment on composition or placement of the OCF haha!! These shots just represent a few moments where where I rolled it down to 1.4 and popped some off. I even forgot to lower my kelvin, so they're a bit warmer than they should be. I included every single shot that I captured wide open, including the misses, so you can get a sense of how the lens performed.
Each shot was in AF-C single point with a D700. I focus by moving the AF point in the viewfinder, which is a little more challenging when shooting dancing wide open. But I think the lens performed admirably

Good stuff. Are you shooting 1/640 via HSS? I never ever shoot anything higher than 1/200 at receptions. I like to keep my ambient on the same level as the flash.
