Thanks for the advice all! Picked up my 58 today! Here are a few unprocessed shots (wireless utility to ipad and uploaded to photobucket). Not sure what that workflow does to degrade the image.
Edit-
(Something funny with the resizing for sure, images are much sharper on the ipad.. I will re-post these later once I process in LR)

The rendition of the lens is somewhat similar to the 50 1.0 L by Canon. How Nikon achieved such bokeh with a F/1.4 aperture is amazing.
Simple: That extra 8mm makes a difference in bokeh size/quality, yet remaining 50mm-ish image.
Just got mine in the mail yesterday. I have not really had any time with it yet. I put a B&W XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M filter on it. I had accidentally scratched my Canon 24-70 II and decided to keep filters on my lenses when possible.
First impression though... I expected it to weigh more for some reason. The lens is really light.

Do a bunch of tests wide open, make sure your copy is sharp while your exchange window is still open. I'd do the tests without the filter. If you want to keep the filter long term that's a fairly personal decision. Filters - most hotly debated forum topic ever haha
It is just that the front element of the 58mm is recessed enough to just use the lens hood to protect it. I just use a filter if I will use my 58mm is a situation where I might get small rocks thrown at me(motocross, mountain bike race, etc).
I just bought another one. I was looking at our Christmas pics from last year and they were all so magical. I'm really thankful to all the guys who post here often. You guys have taken the time to prove there are some sharp copies out there. The new one will be here on Tuesday. Let's see if it's a good one!

Our pleasure ha. *crosses fingers on a good copy for yaa
I really don't think this lens is as copy dependent as you guys make it out to be. It's just a real finicky lens that needs to be learned. Trust me, I get plenty of hazy shots out of mine when conditions aren't perfect.
