"I struggled with this lens a bit today, focus was all over the place. I certainly chalk it up to user error, but man, it's disheartening."
You did a good job the first one, but any camera and lens is going to have trouble with a lower right focus point like on the second one. Unless you focused and re-composed. Shooting and nailing focus on any 1.4 lens is challenging. It definitely takes some practice and skill, and having a higher end camera body doesn't hurt either. Practice with Continuous Autofocus wide open. Don't be discouraged the lens is wonderful.
Just wondering...does anyone focus and recompose when shooting at 1.4? If so, how? I'd love to learn so I'm not limited to my 39 autofocus points. Thanks.

I think it's shooting in AF-C that's causing me grief. I'm used to shooting with fast lenses and focus/recompose with them, but until recently, I've only shot AF-S. My AF issues aren't isolated to just this lens and I refuse to blame the AF of the Df for my troubles. Just need more practice!

When I focus/recompose with fast glass, I try not to tilt the camera when I recompose; rather, I move my body to make sure I maintain the focal plane when I recompose. If I do need to tilt the camera, I'll guesstimate where the final focus plane will be and focus on a different part of the subject.
This technique works well for me in AF-S. In AF-C I'm having some issues with timing and lifting my finger off the AF-ON button before I recompose.

Candid shot of brides mother. That oval bokeh tho!!

You paid so much for oval bokeh!!

Actually, I paid for my favorite lens of all time.
Also, this lens is not about ovalness of bokeh, it is about smooth background bokeh (at cost of edgy foreground bokeh), like in Iluxa007's picture here:
Do you see how out of focus highlights are smooth when they are behind the focus plane and how they are edgy in front of it (the forks on the left and the glass on the right).
This is caused by spherical aberration - I have article on that here: http://jtra.cz/stuff/essays/bokeh/index.html

You wrote that article?! That’s a one hell of a confusing/detailed/greek article I’ve ever seen on bokeh lol
Here are some from today. This baby shines best when subject is placed behind the sun that comes through the leaves. I love it!
You violated chapter 58, section 1.4; You must be sentenced to 4.0 years in jail.
Here is an interesting comparison. last year I shot this kid with an 85mm at f/1.8 and today with 58 wide open, same place, same chair, same kid. Except different processing and harsh light
new member on here, just rented and fell in love with the 58g... it's on my Christmas list!! Any chance someone can let me know how to attach an image to this?

Thanks!
Welcome, sir! You need an buy/sell/upload membership. Otherwise, post your BBcode from flickr, etc.
I'd just like to say hello and a big thanks to contributors to this forum thread for helping me make up my decision to buy this lens.
I've only had it for less than a week and have only shot a few test shots, mainly on my grumpy cats and a friend's baby but I'm loving the rendering.
Its sharp when you nail focus but I must admit its been a bit hit and miss for me so far.
Needing roughly +8 AF fine tune adjustment on mine but that seem to be doing the trick.
Haven't even tried it in good light so everything have been at ISO 1600 or worse. But I'll do my part and try and contribute some images soon.
Cheers
Dave
Dave, one thing to consider is that near MFD there is focus shift going on. Be sure to test and tune at multiple distances. A good rule of thumb is to stop down to f/1.8-2 near MFD.

I ALWAYS focus and recompose. Haven't even tried the other 38 focusing point on my Df yet.
