If you say so, I'm basically just effing around with this lens, it's at least fun to shoot. gear-nut wrote:
@JadedWriter@, I think your last two series above reprent some of your best work yet — and to be clear, I think most of your image posts are excellent. 👍
It has been a while to post here. 58 is still one of my favorite lens. I wish I could be shooting all day long, then I could use this lens more. Or, I just have too many lenses
From a local strolling last week.
PS, in recent trip, 58 was the only F lens I took among all other Z lenses. I took. 14-30/4S, 24-70/4S, 35/1.8S, 85/1.8S, 100-400S, then 58/1.4G. 50/1.2s is a great lens but, considering the weight and size, I chose 58.

Cute! I didn’t realize you had a 58/1.4, although not a surprise.

Thanks Luka. I had 58/1.4 for years but sold it a few years ago then felt that I actually missed it. Last year when my
local dealer had a mint used copy for sale, I decided to buy it again

Totally make sense. This lens definitely suits your style
Shot my first two real events with this lens for work...I am either not keeping this or I'm not using this lens for events. I have one more to do Monday because I don't think I can source a used Sigma 50 1.4 fast enough from Adorama. I'd rather have "boring" backgrounds and know it's sharp than character and have a lens stressing me the F out during a stressful event. I have one more folder to go through, but this thing might just not be great indoors.

Were you shooting it on the Z9 or the D5/D850 ? just curious. I remember you saying that your D850 needed a +2 adjustment, if so that may not be working out for the distance/lighting conditions indoors. You could try on-site AFFT for the lighting and the distance indoors but yes, it is a pain and also stressful AF if you are working on a paid job.
Right. Early on on this thread, Charles. K mentioned that focus adjustment of 58/1.4g on DSLR is distance dependent. It is only good for whatever the distance you used to make the adjustment. My experience was similar. Z6 is better, but it still does mis focus randomly every now and them. I hope you find a sweet spot. It sounds painful for a paid gig.
D5. I do not have the time and/or patience to try AFFT to like 6 different bodies. Nor do I have the time to do it while I'm working an effing press scrum in multiple scenarios, I need it to just work. I need something way more consistent than this lens. I literally took the D5 and 58 out my bag and replaced them with the Z6II and 50 1.2 for an event I have to work on Monday while my Z9 is being serviced by Nikon (which is taking forever for grip replacement). sanjayg wrote:

Keep in mind if I do find a sweet spot, it's a sweet spot for that one body, not the other like 6 bodies that it could be randomly on at any given notice. It did fine with a shorter event (for the most part), which was a lot slower paced. But this lens isn't a photojournalism lens. Street? Sure, Alexander's fashion work sure. Press junkets? Hell no.
I think you may just not have a good copy plus maybe your work also not suited to it. In my opinion, you are doing the right thing letting it go. Nothing as undesirable as gear that seems to be fighting you.
It's not a good press scrum lens. Street, which I don't get paid for I'm less bothered. My job stuff is a different matter. SiMuMe wrote:

Well, if you need the job to be done, the 58 is not your candidate. Take a 50 1.8S that is a workhorse. Fast, sharp, accurate, light..The 58 is a specialty lens...
Even more if you work with a DSLR, it can be a total nightmare
I have the 50 1.2S. I was thinking the 58 1.4 would be able to take over for that while I have my Z9 in the shop, it can't. If the Sigma version is at least sharp wide open, but more "dull" I'd be open to using that. The 1.8's don't interest because I want sharp wide open so I can keep the ISO down while I get candids indoors. The 58 operates better outdoors than it does indoors, I need something that can handle both. jefonyx wrote:

The 50 1.8S is indeed very sharp wide open. I didn't notice you have the 50 1.2S, doesn't it work well?
It works great, I just have my Z9 in the shop so for my event work I bought the 58 to try to keep my event bag mount consistent and not mixed because I went back to DSLR's. Didn't work for too long since my annoyance at the 58 just made me take out the D5 and 58 and I replaced that with the Z6II and 50 1.2 along with some other Z lenses to partner the D850 and 24-70. I'll live, but man that's annoying. jefonyx wrote:
