Without a doubt, the Z series are an amazing first step into real mirrorless for Nikon. I'm just not as interested in first-generation products anymore. I also think it will take 4-5 years to flesh out their Z lens selection. By then I would know if I wanted to stick with a few unique & classic F-mount lenses like the 58/1.4 or if they produce something equivalent for the Z (but my god, I would never buy the $6k manual focus f/0.95). I'm also concerned that, much like Fujifilm, Nikon is relying on software correction of distortion and vignetting for
...Show more

After closely following the real expert (like Ross Harvey) reviews of the Z7, and lack of reports on 'first generation' flaws, I had my mind made up to get a Z6 as soon as it wold become available
Main motivation initially were the, contrary to the D850 (only in Live View), Focus Peaking visibility in the EVF which could/would mean (and has turned out to be) a new lease on life for my old modified Pre-Ai, AI and Ais manual lenses, and the Silent Shutter option I looked forward to use for shooting eg dance and theatre with
I beforehand was willing to accept a 'lesser' AF, already had learned to make peace with that on my DF, ditto for the single card slot

Have used my Z6's (I soon got a 2nd one after my first, very positive, experiences with the first one) for some time now
And after having shot a few gigs under challenging conditions, including several catwalk shows under good, but also very dodgy (varying between heavy back light, low level, and 'creative' use of a smoke machine) light conditions, am quite (positively) surprised by what that 1st generation body not only IQ but also AF wise is capable of

Admittedly have a 'serious' DSLR back up (D850, D800) for the times things get really 'rough' and I really need eg super fast/reliable AF or extra pixels
So don't see any need for me to upgrade to /look out for a 2nd generation or more 'pro' Z body shortly
Also, based on having in the past followed that path only too often (F801 to F801S, later F90 to F90X, then D1 to D1H/D1X), I find, although that's a strictly personal observation, 2nd generation upgrades are just that, nice in itself, but seldom if ever a real step forward worth the extra expense of dropping the 'old' version for the sake of upgrading

As far as lenses is concerned, similarly am quite happy using/shooting with my F mount lenses (varying from the aforementioned old manual glass to modern ones like 2/200VR, 2.8/70-200VRII and Sigma 1.4 105mm DG)
Ever since I started to more or less seriously take pictures was more concerned with getting the picture rather then 'the perfect technique, and consequently also not into the 'sharpest lens' rat race
So not concerned/paranoid about distortion or vignetting, and don't plan/ see no need to get any Z mount glass now or in the future

Haven't used my 1.4 58mm on the Z6 in earnest yet, but don't expect it to be anymore positive/negative then using it on my D850 and D800
It won't be the sharpest nor the fastest one around the block, but then again it never was, and has other characteristics that make it stand out

Another thing this lens is quite exceptional is that it loves back-light conditions!
After using this lens, everything else seem a step backward, it has been staying on my Z6 for 95% of time since I got it 3 weeks ago.

I'm convinced the 58 f1.4G is slightly sharper on my Z7. One of my favorite lenses of all time - truly unique out of focus rendering. Took these of two of my nieces on the first snow in Seattle of the winter.

This thread is driving me absolutely nuts and I'm a freaking landscape photographer who takes casual family portraits every so often! Nikon should post a link on their website to increase sales.

A few images from the past couple of days. So.... a word to the wise. Don't ever sell your 58. I could tell after about two weeks of letting mine go, I knew I was going to have to get one back again. You don't realize what you have until it's gone. I'm glad to have it back on my camera.

Never thought you would have sold it; glad it didn't take you long to figure that out!

Great shots and totally agree. I almost sold my 58 f1.4 a few times when I first switched over from Canon to Nikon, but now it’s a lens that I would immediately repurchase if anything ever happened to my (very sharp) copy. I also love how well the 58 f1.4 works in the 28 f1.4E and 105 f1.4E trinity. The last few weddings I shot, I only used those three lenses aside from the 105 f2.8G micro for the ring and other detail shots

This reviewer found the 58mm 1.4G AF more accurate while slower then the D850. His testing methodology and insight are both very impressive. Check out the blog post:

I think though his bench testing methodology is impressively rigorous, in real world shooting they tend to even out for the type of shooting I do. I'm finding that the Z7 + 58 f1.4 in good light autofocuses about as quick as my D850. The D850 definitely has an edge when it comes to certain low light situations in AF-S, but I actually found during a commercial shoot last week in a pretty dark winery that the Z7 in AF-C and dynamic area AF mode was actually a little more consistent in nailing focus than the D850 in the same mode. Also with IBIS I'm able to handhold the 58 f1.4 at lower shutter speeds and resulting lower iso on the Z7, which also improves relative sharpness compared to the D850 all other things remaining equal.

The more I shoot the Z7 with the D850, the happier I am with them as a dynamic duo. I'm finding that as I've dialed in my shooting technique on the Z7 more (for example when light gets really low, I go from single point AF to wide area AF as the larger surface area helps in achieving focus), I end up using it more as my "A" cam and the D850 ends up being saddled with the more boring "mop-up" shots

Excellent review but as Sung mentioned the 58G on the D850 is fast, quick and accurate. You do need to spend time with the lens to understand how to properly calibrate it and which AF settings to use for different shoots.

One thing I like to use fast prime like the 58 on the z6 is the zooming in focus peaking while on AFC mode, I can then shift my camera very slightly forward or backward to achieve critical focus.

It also shines on the Z6. I also find that using the Wide-S AF setting increases the accuracy of the lens. I'm curious to see what improvements were made to the AF system in the upcoming firmware.

I've been trying to decide between the 85mm 1.4G and the 58mm 1.4G. I think there's much more character in the 58mm 1.4G. The 85mm 1.4 might win a resolution contest, but the rendering is not the same. I'd be shooting the D850 and sometimes think the FL of the 58 might work better.

I got the 85 1.8g and 58 1.4.
I found the 58 length more versatile compared to the 85, I pretty much always choose the 58 over the 85 if I could only take one lens with me.

The bokeh is out of this world for the 58 and there isn't whole lot to be gained from my 85 1.8 imo even with the compressed background (although the 1.4 version would be a step up from 1.8)
