How are you finding 85mm GM compared to 105mm E? I mean of course, they are different focal lengths but in terms of how they draw portraits.
I had the A7rII and GM 85 since it was first introduced and it is an excellent lens and renders portraits wonderfully. The AF is slower and can be difficult to lock in lower light and strong back lighting. Often I would jump to MF over ride in low lighting. I have recently tested the A7rIII and found the GM 85 was faster than the A7rII but still would take its time to lock on AF. That said the AF was very accurate.
In truth comparing 85mm FL the Nikon 85/1.4G in my opinion is very similar to the GM 85. For this reason I keep the 85/1.4G as it is half the size/weight to that of the GM 85.
The 105E is in a different league and is very unique portrait lens and excels over the GM 85. Historically Nikon has made great 105 portrait lenses and I remember using them back late 80's. The minor difference in FL from 85 to 105 is important for the added compression although subtle. The 105E lens alone was enough to draw me back to Nikon for portraits including the 70-200E/58G
Working from home these days - looking after this little guy. No time for other subjects (it's mostly rainy in the PNW anyway). I'm liking the 58mm more and more - glad I got it (should be a very good companion to 28mm that I'm going to have soon - tnx, Blake).
So it's been a while since I sold my 58mm. I replaced it with the 50mm f/1.8G to see if I'd miss the 58. I've never really been a 50 guy, but the 58 was good enough to make me fall in love with the focal length. Still, I couldn't get over paying $1,300 for a 50-ish lens. It just seemed wrong....like paying $70k for a Toyota. It's a completely personal thing though, and a bit ridiculous I know, but I can't help it.
I have to say, I don't at all. It's insane how one of the cheapest lenses in Nikon's lineup is one of the least flawed, and actually pretty durn good lenses. Also, the bokeh is as inoffensive as it gets. I'd totally recommend it for anyone who's eyeing the 58, but can't justify the price. Here are a couple of samples from my most recent shoot with the 50mm 1.8G

Good stuff dude. I actually agree with what you said in terms of 50 vs 58G...
I ended up skipping Canon's 50 1.2L and went for 50mm 1.8 STM instead, focusing on 35 and 85mm as being my top notch lenses.

These 1.8 50s are killing it. What did you get for when you need to go wider than 35?

I have the 58G, 50/1.4G, 50/1.8G and 50 Art for this reason. Each lens has its niche and look
Wow! At least I can say I've owned (and sold) every lens on that list =D

Yes. of course, each has it's niche.
However the 58 is not really a 50 and closer to a 60/70.
I share ownership with you on the 58G and 50 Art.
I have as well the Canon 50/1.2 - Zunow 50/1.1 - Leica R Lux 50 E60 and Cron 50 E55.....and I am not even a big fan of the 50mm focal length........ but enjoy the bragging.............

So far I’ve only got 35II/50STM/85IS and 100 macro.
Kinda broke at the moment but my next lenses should be 16-35/4 IS and 24LII for WA prime.
Really hoping to get one or the other before wedding season hits

The 50/1.2L is one of my all time favorites too. I did forget to mention I do have the Leica R 50 Cron (Mandler) also.
Fortunately 50mm is a favourite FL For the cost of used 50/1.8G and 50/1.4G they are almost a must have. My wife uses the D750 with the 50/1.8G as her light travel kit.
