I cannot live with the CA of this lens. In the field I'm wow'ed by the image this lens produces, but them I'm disapointed when I see them on the big screen and even more when they are printed. This kind of CA on a 1700$ prime? Sharpness is excellent on a D4, but when I put it on the D800E, it suddenly looks soft-ish, even after PP. The first shoot I did with this lens, I needed to redo the shots with the 58 2 weeks later because they were not good enough for the print size, both in sharpness and CA (which is visible even when "removed").
Should I go for the Sigma 50mm? Or Tamron 45?...Show more →
You need to AF-Fine tune the 58G with your D800E. I found that these hi-res bodies are more finicky than the 16mp bodies. I have a Df and D810 and have the same experience and AFFT fixed it.

I couldn't get my example to a consistently acceptable level of sharpness on my D800e, either, so sold it after 4 months. I've only used the one copy, though, so I guess there's a chance it was just a soft sample, although I'm inclined to think not.
Have a Siggy Art 50 on the way right now, so looking forward to comparing!

In case you didnt notice, you are in a thread for Nikon AF-S 58mm 1.4 Fans. I guess you should ask the question elsewhere..
I love using it, my work just doesn't allow me to post it within the first 6 months. Otherwise I'd love to share some shots, they look great at "internet-resolution".
You can be a fan of this lens, but still realise that some work needs something different.
Ps: It is fine tuned, focus is clearly spot on (very easy to see with green and purlple CA right next to where you focussed) .
I mean I got some good glass: (Phone pic, notice the lack of CA with this backlighting, even my phone has good glass )
That's without the 105 macro, 40 macro, 55 macro, 50 1.4 and a bunch of MF lenses. It's what I was packing for a shoot a while back.
