So I picked up one of these to shoot a wedding tomorrow. It arrived too late in the day for me to take it in to get adjusted on my bodes. Shooting a tilted ruler shows me the images are going to be soft no matter what I do. How stupid am I to just mount this and shoot a couple's most important day with it without AF adjustment?

Very stupid.
The lens is already soft, why make it softer without AFT?

I made my own ghetto tune out of pieces of card board. Adjusting it +/- 10 doesnt really do anything to increase apparent sharpness on where its supposed to be.

I bought mine and it was set at -2. Tape measures and rulers had me at +11 with mixed live results. The service department at my local camera shop suggested turning off my AFFT as the lens target tests showed it to be a little better without. I ended up choosing a +5 on my back focusing Df and was very happy with the results. I am not shooting the most important day of a couples life. Ymmv.
I remade my ghetto tune and tried to be more precise. I've got +12 on one body +6 on another. +/- 5 doesn't seem to change it too much. I hope thats normal. I am aware that the AF adjust is more for body to body differences not the lens.

Completely normal, I need +12 too. Be aware that with this lens focus seems to be better at f/1.4 over a distance, if you want to use it wide-open for close-up shots, set the camera to continuous shooting and fire away a couple of shots while slightly moving. You will probably get one that is perfect.
It's a risk shooting a wedding with this lens before exploring its characteristics IMHO. What you could do is shoot at f/2, it's crazy sharp but still has nice bokeh at that aperture.
Really gave this lens a workout today. Hopefully will have a few in focus keepers. I LOVE the size and weight, and the focal length sits very nicely in between 35 and 105. It was super nice to not have to make choices between 50 and 85. My 50 felt just a touch too wide in comparison to this guy. The color was awesome and I did see some special bokeh. It's nowhere near 105 status and in the hand it feels like. $400 lens. Seriously considering ditching my 24 and 35 for a 24-35 f2 to go with this. I love the 35 1.4 bokeh though.
