forgot about this one. big sister wanted to get in front of the camera on her little sisters newborn session day. the newborn photos were shot with 35 and 50 ART lenses so ill save those for another thread since they aren't 58 specific.
This is what I like! Your skin tones are PERFECT! You might have a different PP technique, I don't know... Me thinks I need to try a D800e/D810 first then...
But then again, there's no way I'm shooting several thousand photos with a 36MP at a wedding.
Elijah, I haven't used VSCO before so I can't really compare them, but Replichrome has been great especially the Portras and the Kodak b&w's (3200, 400, etc...). You have decent control over the final output. Ektars are an over saturated mess.
Hussein, how do you like Replichrome vs VSCO? I have a few VSCO film packs and a Mastin Labs but somehow I don't like Mastin Labs anymore. I keep going back to a simple Fuji 160+ preset lately...
I need to switch to Canon... Skin tones are day and night difference. Nikon colors suck...

If you're worried about skintones, stop using film simulations
Or use a passport colorchecker to at least get a start. I'm too lazy to use one. I really do think Shawn should do a youtube video to explain to us how he get's such great colors and skin tones! Maybe a preset for your buds @58mm thread!

EDIT i didnt see this until after i rambled on about my process below lol.
that gives me a new project to work on, maybe i will try to do a short non professional video of editing a specific image lol.
BTW I use a EXPO DISC at almost every outdoor portrait session to set my base white balance. helps immensly than just shooting in RAW at AUTO OR even trying to set to a specific scene. the custom WB from expodisc or White card is really great.
I also have a white/grey card and sometimes I set my WB with Expodisc first THEN i take a picture of teh grey card with that custom white balance to use in case I need it in LIGHTROOM with a white dropper tool. that way i have my Custom WB range covered.

I like your processing Cory, why don't you fess up your preset?
it depends on my mood, the session im editing and the client. I have been known to crush the blacks and clip the highlights with the best of them and am very familiar with some haze, natural or not and some cross processing.
believe it or not, most of my images start out with a base VSCO Portra 400 preset with the grain turned all the way down, curves and HSL manually adjusted for skin tones and then the image is brought over into photoshop where I apply a Greater than gatsby action called imagination or emotional colorbase where I then manually adjust layers i dont like or remove them completely. then apply some D&B in some areas for some depth I then finish the image off with a film grain action i made myself, lower the opacity and be done with it. Depending on the image i will clean up things i dont like such as buildings in the back ground, weird faces with swaps i perform, closed eyes etc.. or fixing the image for symmetry issues since i'm OCD with that.
I use a lot of actions in photoshop. most of them are pieces form ones i bought that i didnt like used individually and through trial and error found combinations of looks i like and just picked and pulled pieces from various actions and merged them into new actions for myself that i can apply on batch if I need to.
I take it that you are not that fond of bright colors look?
also here's a shot from a little girls 6 month session i'm editing currently. Was really happy with the lighting on this one and really wanted to stretch the legs on the 58 wide open on a wide shot.
Awesome stuff in here. Question for 58 users: How does it fit into your FF lens kit? I'm using a 28/50/85 1.8G kit and thinking about changing to the 58G, but worry that it's too close to the 85, which I LOVE. Does it simply replace the 50? I have a 180D coming too which will serve for the long end, and a 20-35 I use for landscapes/family. The 28/50/85 I use mostly for vacation/travel and street.

It is so personal. My kit is quite different. I prefer the 58mm over the 85mm focal length and for me it doesn't make sense to own both of them. If I had a prime kit I would likely get 20/58/135mm for 3 lens kit for travel.
Right now I travel a bit heavier. 14-24/35/58/150-600
