if i shoot a small bar code, i shoot straight on and fine tune to remove the green/purple CA. I also compare the sharpness to a Live View shot.
I've done that as well. Usually just use a lens box with a white and black barcode. I'm slightly unsure how accurate it is as a lens recently I did this with, was sharper when the AF fine tune was shut off when shooting at distances larger than 10 feet. But it was perfect with af fine tune on and shooting under 10 feet.
Shawn, if my gear ever ends up in the dumpster, you're the reason
Edit - I have not been shooting much at all lately. Took a break after that wedding, then the e-session really burned me out. Now I'm getting really itchy to take the DF + 58 on a dirt path in the woods.
Thanks Jason! I definitely understand the burnout feeling. You get so mentally and creatively drained sometimes.

Way too nice Don!

Shawn - that is a great bunch of shots!
Thank you very much. I was very happy with the latest pictures coming from this lens.

just wondering whats your setting for the AF Fine-tune mine is +14 is that normal?
I consider anything that works well within the allowed range as normal. If you are happy with your lens at +14, there is no reason to give it another thought.
My 58 is pretty good with no adjustment on my two bodies and is best around +3 or +5 (at least in my AC'd apartment). I have a few other lenses that take more than +/- 14 on my d800. Don't sweat it.

Having small fine tune is fine but anything above 10 -/+ I considered is extreme
I think I must have done something wrong my test (Lensalign mkii & finetune v3.0) - I will have to do that again over this weekend I gotta to make sure I run the test at least 3 times to make sure I get consistent result.
I've been using the lens for a few weeks on a D810 and love its rendering and overall image quality.
I ran some AF micro adjustment tests using Reikan FoCal at various apertures and had some interesting results. Wide open at f/1.4 it's dead accurate at +3, but stopping down to f/2 moves the focus plane enough that it now needs -7, increasing to -14 at f/2.8 and smaller.
This appears to show increasing focus shift rearwards from the subject plane as the lens is stopped down, with the AFMA negative values pulling the focus back towards the camera with smaller apertures.
It's a bit of a nuisance to have such significant differences in AFMA values at different apertures, but it's not too tough to manage and it does make a significant difference in AF accuracy.
@david: that's pretty weird. Thanks for pointing out that this lens goes to f2. We all need a reminder now and then. I'll let you know if I have similar issues venturing into smaller apertures. Did you find this out shooting some barcodes as others have suggested? I usually use this guy: http://www.testcams.com/DotTune/CrossHatch_Target.png
I find dottune not so effective since I get a dot a lot of the time from +20 all the way to -20. Instead, I shoot and look for fringing.
