UGH... this lens may win me over. I'm thinking about reducing the redundancy of my kit. My 70-200 is my strong portrait lens and my 85 1.4g is great, but I'm wondering if I should dump that lens in favor of this 58.

I dumped my 85mm 1.4 for the 58 and use my 70-200 to barely cover everything else. The 85mm is special, though

The 58mm is nice! I have one but it doesn't get used much. I mostly use my Zeiss 100mm f/2 & 135mm f/2. I see good stuff here done with the 58mm, but everyone is always using it wide open, all the time even with group shots. That is crazy! Group shots should never be take wide open, it will be impossible to get each person in focus. I remember seeing some wedding group shots taken at f/1.4 with the 58 in this thread and I bet those don't look good at full res.
The 58 is nice and looks great at f/2 and up. F/1.4 is soft. I wish it was as sharp as my Zeiss lenses! Man those Zeiss lenses are amazingly sharp! I need to get my 58mm out again and shoot some more with it. I used it a lot as a landscape lens in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was great.

Shot of the 2 birds I'll be flying this summer.

Is that a stanced airplane? Is there a VW badge on it somewhere?

Yes I know it depends on their distance. But shooting a group you can only put in a straight line and that's pretty much your only option ...

Shot the 58 with live view a bit more than usual and found the focus at f1.4 to be even sharper. Not that it isn't usable with the optical viewfinder, I was just pleasantly surprised with how it performed in live view.

they asked for the token city hall shot...

Very nice! Yeah I've used live view before with the 58mm, it is better. That Nikon AF fine tune doesn't always work to well for me. The lens seems to back focus some, live view is a great way to go. This are sharp photos. Well done. I like the second one best.

Hopefully that strap works well. I just looked it up. Is it really $300?

Makes me feel a bit better about buying my second RRS tripod

$215. The price goes up from there for men who like men that care about what kind of leather they get

It looks gaudy as hell, but it sure is comfy and functional.

2. I have this one in color and its nice but I really loved the B&W version better. I hate posting both versions I feel it waters down the impact.
