Well it is small and lighter than my current 5d2...so that's a bonus. Image quality, number of pixels and able to use my existing lens is where this camera shines. Would I love a Canon in this same form factor, with the same quality lens and the same price point...you bet, but where is it?
For now, the Sony appears to be the best bet for a Canon landscape photographer.
Oh...and if I really want to go small, I can just take my mitt full of wonderful Zuiko lens which are all very tiny, making for a great compact outfit.

Subject to these points it seems to me that Sony are eating Canon's lunch. The A7 looks innovative, well designed, uses sensors from the best maker, has great resolution, and has the potential to turn many Canon and Nikon users into alt lens users at very low additional cost. Every time someone has threatened to sell their Canon kit here on FM the standard reply is to taunt them with having to sell all their lenses and buy in some new lens mount. Now there is an affordable and rational way to exit the Canon system without having to buy new FF lenses. That is an earth shaking development! ...Show more → EB-1 wrote:
The Sonys will only sell in small volumes compared to the 5D III or D800/e. The vast majority of users need more versatile and practical photo equipment. The Sony lens lineup is a joke. Many an A7r will be used as a second or third body until Canon produces more desirable bodies/sensors. Then there will be plenty of A7r bodies resold cheaply.

The key in your post is "until Canon produces more desirable bodies/sensors". You also need to include affordable in that equation. For my needs, this Sony hits a many sweet spots, size, sensor, price...and can take all my existing lens. Real winner for a landscape photographer.

The A7r and adapter are $2700. It's not a lot less than a 5D III for example.

Yes the body is smaller than your 5D. But the lenses will be larger because of the adapter (and you wrote that you can use all your lenses) So all together the size and weight is pretty much the same for both combos.

+1, Sony A7(r) mirror less cam is one FF DSLR game changer in next decade. Canon/Nikon shall respond to this one and pretty soon we will have the same form factor. From here on the FF pricing points will be on consumer favor.

I can see that trend in the cheapo FF space like the 6D and D600/610, but not with the better cameras. Slow-mo AF, a crummy 340-frame battery, and a single SD slot will not cut it for a lot of photography.

But the 5d3 adds nothing over my 5d2 when it comes to landscape photography...otherwise I would have upgrade. Now this Sony with it's size and sensor definitely adds onto what the 5d2 delivers. I don't need the AF of the 5d3 as I shoot most of my images from a tripod using live view.

+1, Canon/Nikon will have a hard time to re-class their cam since Sony will always put their best sensor in this format.

It's sort of the same difference as between a 1dx and a 5d3 when it comes to savings in bulk and weight. When you trek with your gear, every once saved is worth it. Why do you think carbon fibre base tripods are so popular?

We all love the 5D series, but it's not about the size...it's all about the sensor!

No it's not at all the same difference as between a 1DX and 5D. And you know that. A FF Canon body is about 300 gr more than the new Sony body. And when using your Canon lenses like you wrote, then you have to add the weight of the Metabones adapter or other adapter to the Sony combo.

Yes I agree. I also belive the sensor is better. But when someone say size, he don't talk about the sensor.
I can imagine to buy the new Sony because of the sensor. But never because of it's size/weight when using Canon lenses
p.8 #14 · Sony A7 and A7r Full Frame with Canon Lenses
Yes, it's all about the SENSOR. Just think about it....Threads like this one... do not exist if Canon had up-to-date the latest sensor tech in their latest releases.

The (Canon) lenses will be the same size they have always been - if Canon could have developed smaller lenses for FF they would have done so. Just consider the body to be (Sony + Metabones) and you have a 36MP FF high DR at low ISO focus peaking live HDMI out (for tablet as digital ground glass) etc. camera that not only accepts (nearly) all Canon lenses but a whole lot of other excellent glass. If rapid AF is not important to you (there are many who shoot from a tripod and use Live View) this is close to the camera Canon should have already produced for them and it's only $2700. The fact that its size is convenient and is not "behemoth 1 series" size is a nice bonus Landscape and studio folks should be happy - I am

I'm also happy with it. But not because of it's size/weight. Because that will be about the same as my FF Canon..............

He actually said "the (smaller) size is a bonus not the main reason for his interest in the camera (and I agree) - the 36MP FF-ness is the real excitement (and if it had been in a 5D size body that would be great too...

Yes if it was smaller it would be a bonus, but it's not The difference is nearly nothing. (and your quote was not the post I replied to. He made that post after my first reply)
