I actually wish the A7R had the AA filter too. 36MP isn't high enough density on FF to get rid of aliasing/color moire, not at all. Maybe 80MP you start thinking about getting rid of it.
You will never- not ever- eliminate sampling artifacts with a sensor that uses a color filter array- especially not one as simple as the Bayer pattern. Resolution be damned, there will always be some point where the pattern in the light projected on the sensor matches the pixel pitch of the sensor. Life has no resolution; so while higher resolution color-filter sensors may hide the problem, they can never fully prevent it.
And it's not like we can actually take advantage of all of that resolution yet; we'd need better lenses still.
What we really need is effective Foveon-style (or other) sensor technology that doesn't use a patterned color filter. Not sure if anyone is actually any closer than Sigma is, which isn't nearly close enough, but that's what we're waiting for.

EVF's these days are very good IMO and having a real-time histogram on demand in the VF, and a magnified 10x view for accurate manual focusing are more than enough to make up for any shortcomings, and they are getting less and less.

I haven't used a Sony EVF in a while, but if they've cured the crushed blacks problem, and the A7's have as much eye relief as indicated (to help with sunlight bleeding), then the EVF should be just dandy, actually.
OVFs are good, but man on man do I get used to seeing pre-results with an EVF, then after about 15 shots into using my 5D3 I'm like "ah crap, I've got a freaking -3EV dialed in by accident" !
EVFs actually help prevent chimping, something I have to "relearn" with an OVF.

I've been using OVF for 8 years, but I could totally switch to EVF right now.
After playing with features like focus peaking and focus magnification, it's almost "hard" to go back to OVF.. Well maybe not hard, but it sure feels like something is missing in the OVF.

Maybe just me!! I think for the pocket camera Sony should leave EVF and the grip off from the A7/A7r body and make it as option liked RX1. I've owned number of m4/3 and NEX cameras and I don't use its OVF/EVF all the time. Yes but I need it on my 5D3 and D800

I use EVF all the time and wouldn't buy the camera without one built-in. Also what happens when you want to use flash (external) and have the EVF attached? The one good thing about optional EVF is they can usually tilt and replace old angle finders nicely, but these days with tilt LCDs, not as necessary as they used to be.

You'll kick yourselves once Canon introduce their own 36MP+ body - you know they will make one. I don't care myself. The Sony looks great, but I'm not in a hurry to get one given that we are talking more expensive lenses than Canon and they will run into largely the same size issues as any other FF camera. The price is also prohibitive for many. A 35mm f2.8: haven't seen one of those since the 1960s! They even have already added a battery grip as an accessory! I thought small size is what it is all about? Does this mean their A-mount system is dead or will that be kept going?...Show more →
I won't be kicking myself if the canon 36+MP body still has lower dynamic range than all the other competition. I will be happy.
There are two strikes against canon now - they don't have a high mpx camera and they don't have a high dynamic range camera. I am getting sceptical that they will solve the latter with the former. Otherwise why have the just introduced 1dx that has lower dynamic ranges. And if they do issue a 6diii with high dynamic range and big mpx, that makes a whole lot of their customers holding on for an upgrade to the model base. In other words they are in a tough spot.
They need to introduce a high mpx /high dynamic range for landscapse or we will all go sony
That move will make the 5diii lacking. It will need the high dynamic range. Although it could just be a people/wildlife camera I guess
Ditto on the 1dx
Ditto on the 6d
And the eos-m needs to be a ff too. So the ef-m lens will be lacking.
In other words, a high mpx/high dynamic range could make their whole line of eos obsolete before its regular life.

^ Very deep analysis, but it sounds totally legit.
I believe that Canon will simply continue to ignore the competition (like they've done with the D800). And later on when they finally get in the mood to introduce their high MP sensor, it will probably debut in a 7.000 bucks 1D-body.. And yeah, who knows if it'll bring a bump in the DR department? I'm not too sure.

If the A7R sings with my 24 TS-E II, 24-70 II, 70-200 II I may well be using Sony for landscape and Canon for sports/wildlife. However, my paralysis by analysis approach will ensure that the day after I buy the Sony, Canon will release a 44MP 5D IV, with 15 stops DR, no shadow banding and 10fps
If that happens then I'd still be extremely happy to have purchased the Sony because it then becomes my very light and portable backup body

My next purchase was going to be 24-70II but I might have to rethink my lineup. I always wanted a good quality range finder and after using the EOS M past few days loving the size and weight factor, I might have to jump on this even if it is a Sony! Canon DSLR for long lens and events... Sony + few primes for everyday walk around... My wife can have the Eos M!

If you're hoping for a rangefinder-- you're going to be disappointed. The only currently produced digital option is a Leica.
There's the discontinued RD1, and then there are pseudo-rangefinders-that-aren't-really, like the OVF in the X-Pro1, and the split-image focus assist in the X100s.

That's the catch isn't it. With current Canon pricing, anything with the Sony specs that performs as we would expect it to would be way out of my price range for about 5 years. For whatever the 5D III doesn't do for some people, I still am very happy with it from star scapes, to low light toddler action, to long lens wildlife. I feel fortunate to have the camera and a good lens.
I remember all the Fuji hype with their interchangeable lens camera (can't remember model name) but afterwards things seemed to go silent about it. Kinda like the Samyang tilt shift talk and the bubble burst with the first review. Anyway, the Sony is still pie in the sky until we see it in full use with a few objective reviews that tell us what it really is. I am sure it will be great, but the niggle is in the details.

Good on Sony for including high res EVF IMO.
My Oly Pens have a clip-on EVF but the popup flash can be used as a master for external units off-shoe. I use the EVF tilt feature all the time. A tilt EVF is easier to use in tight situations than a tilt LCD since I need my eyes to be about 12 inches from the LCD in order to see it.

A new EOSfun dilemma for many: to 6D or to A7(r)? That's the question.
This one is easy for me the way I currently shoot, i take the 7A(r) because my current cams can do whatever 6D/5D3 offering and none of my cams has the DR/IQ/Resolution/Cleaner Shadows that A7(r) offers. Beside, I need a portable cam for my vacation anyway. Budget wise, there a long way for canon to match this twin. My plan is very easy to reverse whenever canon has offered something better in the long run. I am sure there is a ton of fun when integrating A7(r) with 85L1.2/50L1.2/50L1.0/35L1.4 lenses. I don't think it's bad to step out the circle within the circles once in awhile. Who knows I might learn something new in "lights" in the process to merge two different system together
