Hi all, I have just finished writing a blog on how to fix a Metabones adapter without dismantling the unit. With the purchase of my A7R I received a free adapter as a redemption offer from Sony Australia. I did a lot of comparison testing against several adapters that I had previously used with a Sony Nex7. My tests proved that the Metabones causes flare under certain lighting conditions. For example, long exposures with overcast skies, and around rainforests, waterfalls, with night shots and architectural interiors.

So I got the Mark 4 metabones adapter (ordered directly from MB). A few observations:
1. It now comes with a protective plastic case and two end caps - which should be nice - to prevent dust gathering in the optical path.
2. It's tolerances and quality is pretty much as bad as before, the adapter still moves slightly when mounted on A7R.
3. The inner path does appear larger and it does reflect much less. Putting the two side by side by a light source makes it pretty apparent.
4. So far I tried 24-70mm mk2 on the new adapter, and I have been unable to induce vertical flares (i.e. coming from light just above or below the frame). MB3, with top and bottom unflocked, does exhibit flares from the same spot. I was able to replicate side flares, but they were weaker than a flocked MB3. Haven't tried TS-E 17 yet.
I'm actually thinking of swapping the two mount ends from MB3 to MB4 - but I guess I can contact Metabones first. My MB3 had a perfect lens-mount side tension.

So you will need to just flock the sides on you version 4?
Yea I may need to do that. Though its also possible side flares are not really adapter related, but I'll have to test that before I bother flocking.Mark 4 is certainly an improvement though I really can't stand build quality.

Anyone tested the new Canon 16-35/F4 on the Sony A7/7r yet? Based on the MTF performance this lens might be significantly sharper than Sony's upcoming 16-35/F4....

It might be sharper but you always loose something with the adapters. No free lunches and whatnot.
So far I didn't lose anything with the use of adapters other than slow AF which is no issue for me since I use MF with the A7R anyway. Just opposite, I only gained by using the A7R and adapters in incredible resolution and DR! And of course in the flexibility to use all kind of MF lenses.

I found the metabones/A7 auto focuses as fast and accurately as Canon's 5DIII live view, ~2 seconds. Certainly sluggish by dslr standards, but fine for most things not moving quickly. I still have my dslr for bif and children, not sure which are faster at times!

A7(R,S) owner, what to replace your A7 series? I can't think of any for now. I am in love with photography all over again just like my 1Ds2 in the old day.

I *really* do want to take the plunge with an a7 or an a7R - I am concerned about the plastic mount in the a7 and the kickback on the a7R. I was in B&H today and there is a definite bounce on the a7R.
My big worry tho is about the MB III/IV adapter - there seems to have been a number of QA/QC problems with them - either too tight or too loose. Has the QA/QC improved with the MBIV? (btw, B&H is now selling the MBIII for 379 and the MBIV for 399)

Rob,
I'm a Canon guy - I'm hoping something will be announced at Photokina this Fall - I'm in no rush to switch right now... I took my time with an EOS-M and I'm very happy with it!

Has anyone ran into a problem where their a7 or a7r hangs on a black but still backlit screen after taking a photo for 20+ seconds or until you restart the camera? I have also run into problems where the camera will take 10-20 seconds to wake from sleep a few times a day. Needless to say, I have missed some great photos because of these "crashes". Have only been using a metabones III adapter with the 35L and 85L in manual focus. Really like the a7 otherwise. The shutter is way quieter than my SLRs, particularly with the electronic first curtain. ...Show more →
Yes.
I only get this with the Metabones adapter & no other adapters or native FE lenses.
