Before his article, adapters were never labeled as the devil.
Roger, see what you've done!?
His lab tests convincingly show deterioration though. The question is...will we see it on our prints?
Sony just released their own "FF to FF adapters", LAEA3 & LAEA4 and there is no mention of image degradation. After all, there is no extra glass being added. Misalignment is a potential issue but perhaps nothing to worry in real world shooting. If that was the case, wouldn't extension tubes degrade IQ well?
We even stack them!
I am excited by the prospect of using the best Canon lenses on a high MP/DR sensor. I will definitely be comparing images from the Canon 5D Mark III and Sony a7R + adapter combo.

True on all counts!
Here's another historical piece of evidence: for a number of years before the D800 came out, Canon was king as far as sensor resolution. However, Nikon happened to have the 14-24 2.8G, which to this day is one of the most amazing ultrawides ever made. Many people adapted the 14-24 to Canon cameras, with results better than what was available out of Canon's lens lineup and with more resolution than what was available on Nikon cameras. Even back then, we knew the adapter could make a difference, especially between cheap and high quality adapters. But the people using well made ones were quite happy with the results

Just check out the comparisons on the 16-9.net website. He tries out all the great alt glass on a 1Ds III. The 14-24 did better than the Canon 14L II despite the adapter.

It usually depends if that difference in lab resolution is visible to eye or not. If I remember correctly difference up to 150 lp/ph isnt visible to most people.
Plus I think that if adapter is really good and aligment of camera isnt too off (1Ds MK3 class shouldnt be, Rebel class might be different), then results might be pretty good..
Leitax wasnt tested but I suspect it might fare much better than rest..

A Nikkor to EOS adapter is much thinner as the registration distances are similar. The differences in optical designs would be less different than a lens designed for the Sony E mount.

EBH
I don't think I buy that. The reason that adapters have the potential to degrade image quality is because of misalignment stemming from the mounting interface. A thin adapter has just as much possibility to have an alignment issue as a thick adapter. Manufacturing tolerances don't just get better because the space between interfaces changes. It's the interfaces themselves that are at issue.

No disrespect intended but I do find it ironic that here on Fm we are constantly being exhorted not to "pixel peep" or become "measurebaters", and yet a whole class of devices (adaptors) are criticized for potentially having often incredibly tiny manufacturing defects.
I am a pixel peeper, and have been using lens adaptors for years perfectly happily. Mind you I pay for good brands, not $20 rubbish off the bay. The point made above, that top quality Nikkor zooms are routinely used happily on Canon bodies, really should end the matter. It would be much more constructive to work out which adaptor brands are best, rather than writing them all off.

I think some people are being overly skeptical and anti because of the same reasons they defended the subpar sensor ratings of the 5D3 vs the D800. It's just another case of fanboyism and emotional brand investment.
Now that Sony offers a tiny camera with a sensor that trumps everything Canon has to offer (and can be used with EF-lenses), I think that many are feeling a disturbance in the "Canon-force". And therefore they do their best to brush aside the fact that their EF-glass can be adapted to this new and superior non-Canon sensor.

I hope I'm wrong though.
Agree. I go even a step further - my impression is that some (Canon-police) in this forum are getting a paycheck from Canon and disguise themselves as professionals or amateuers. At least one member here is open about being a Canon employee, but he is writing comments also in a reasonable way including valid criticism of the brand (he is the exemption).
Seeing the writing style and the timing of responses of some, I suspect that the same person sometimes posts with two separate anonymous identities here to make her/his points appear more valid and supported. But this is difficult to prove, and I only wanted to mention it here as addition to what was said above (has nothing to do with the topic of this discussion).

With the a7r, I wonder if Sony isn't trying to pull an Apple...?
Apple couldn't make their PC's mainstream, so they went around the back: created iTunes/iPod, created iPhone and iPad and became a massive brand and - low and behold - their PC's become popular too.
Are Sony doing the same? Create a mirrorless that gives so many people what they want, including the ability to use their current lenses, in the hope that eventually enough people will move to Sony for their DSLRs too?
They're playing a long game if that's their plan, but a clever one... although potentially one nicked from Apple

Maybe it just doesn't push their buttons? People have all sorts of opinions for all sorts of reasons which don't match each other.. and it doesn't have to be fanboism.

Haha...needed a good laugh for Monday morning
Yes, the complaints about adapters seem silly. I use a variety of cheap and high quality adapters and don't see a difference. A Mirex with M645 lens would be nice on the A7r
