My settings:
- focus mode: manual (to AF when I want and not when camera wants...)
- live view display: setting effect OFF (to be able to focus wide open)
- disabled: lens correction, vignetting, whatever there was this kind of things
- disabled: high ISO noise reduction
- enabled: long exposure noise reduction (=black frame subtraction)
- monitor: either showing the screen with all possible settings or turned off
- DISP for finder: No Disp. Info & Level
- DISP for monitor: No Disp. Info. & Level & For viewfinder

Hey Samuli and congrats to the camera. Right, the Canon have a real rear wheel and is easily used with gloves and a number of other things the Sony wont match. (Small) size comes with drawbacks apart from personal preferences about this and that.

About your list: do you think 3, 4 & 5 affect RAW shooting? I have taken for granted they dont. There's a lot of noise in my high ISO images but on the other hand I have not bothered to check how the camera is set.

Speaking of which, in high ISO my take so far is that a Canon 5D2 does it better (1600/3200) than the A7. Oddly I've seen some A7 banding too in images posted here, which is usually not an issue with Canon with deliberately underexposed images in dark conditions.

3 - No idea, I would assume that they have no effect. Disabled them just to be sure about it.

4 - I would assume that this won't affect to RAWs, in JPG it seems to smearing details and smoothing solid color areas.

5 - This definitely affects to RAW, it's the very very old method (very good method of course) where camera takes first exposure as user has commanded camera to do (image 1) and then same exposure with shutter closed (image 2). Then it subtracts the RGB-values of image 2 from image 1. Since pixels work the same way in each exposure (on same conditions), at least according to theory, this will eliminate most of the noise. Negative effect is that when I take 30s exposure I have to actually wait 60s before camera is ready for next shoot. In Canon cameras this can be set on and off from custom functions and when turned on it start taking this double time at 1.3s (or 1s depends on Canon EOS model) and longer shutter speeds. Haven't yet detected the threshold where Sony starts to shoot the 2nd frame - for sure everything over 3s but I haven't yet shoot much close to 1s range where the threshold most likely is.

I purchased Iridient Developer (should have done that ages ago, really nice RAW developer) this morning to see inside the RAW files. I haven't shot high ISO with 5DmkII, just ISO100 99% of the time, so can't comment to ISO1600/3200. But I was surpriced that from the night images I took yesterday; there is more noise than in 5DmkII images @ ISO 100 & 30s. The noise was nothing serious, but there was more of it than in 5DmkII. "Quality" of noise seems good, it doesn't jump to my eyes.

Don't yet have the wired remote control, so can't test before next week longer exposures (somebody on previous page or page before that asked about it). Also I don't have any 49mm filter or even 49mm -> 58/67mm step-up rings to use the ND400x filter to check the loooooooong exposures.

Have anyone tried Pen-F lenses on the A7(R)?

You have some samples over at GetDPI, here.. The only Pen lens I still have is the 60/1.5. It seems to work fine but I need some daylight to get anything else but indoor test shots.

EDIT: I changed the link, it pointed to a single reply first, now I think you are directed into the thread.

After firing off a few shots, I now understand (a) why people are complaining about the shutter sound (is the A7R even louder than the A7?) and (b) why there's a setup thread. This is a complicated little camera.

The A7R should be as loud as the A7 when the electronic first curtain is turned off.

The manual claims 1s.

BTW, A7 doesn't work correctly with Cactus v5 and Youngnuo 560 v1 flashes at 1/250, the top is black. Need to down the speed to 1/160 to eliminate this.

I upgraded to DXO Optics Pro 9.1 this morning and compared the results from my A7r to Iridient

They added excessive sharpening at high ISO after PRIME, which rather introduces artifacts than improve microdetails.

It took three test images to find out; with the A7 at ISO 100 the dark frame noise reduction kicks in at 1s. Always trust the Sony documentation.

Qucik comment:

I've yet to exchange the battery in the A7r I got on monday, have shot a bit every day. Me thinks this battery craze is a bit overblown.

Metabones (dumb) Nikon F adapter arrives tomorrow. Yay, I get to resurrect a pile of old lenses!

This morning I wandered around in -2C weather, wore my standard thin wool liner gloves the entire time, had zero problems handling the camera. Mucked about with the camera for several hours, still have half a battery charge left.

I've got to get those gloves doesn't work with leather gloves
Let us know what you think of the Metabones adapter, I have one from Novoflex's it doesn't have the tripod mount adapter, which would be the only reason for getting Metabones'

Well, DXO numbers made me feel a bit better about keeping D600 over A7 for now. Looks like I'd need to go up to A7r to really match D600 IQ, so glad I waited. I guess. At least I can tell myself that

Yeah, I found the setting to turn off the electronic curtain on the A7 to simulate this. Pretty loud. I think if I buy an A7 it will not be the R version.

So far I'm enjoying the camera, but to be honest I think the X-E2 has a somewhat nicer shooting experience in terms of control scheme and layout. The A7's integrated grip, EVF, and tilt LCD are fantastic though, and the FE 35 seems to be a pretty nice lens, about the same size as the Fuji 35/1.4. It will be nice once the A7 has some fast native glass, that 55/1.8 can't ship soon enough.

I am pretty happy to see how configurable the camera is. You can even turn off AF on shutter press and program the AF/MF button to AF On, like I generally do with my Nikons. I don't think I've seen any NEX camera support that.

the NEX-7 works the same way. that set up is the only way i can tolerate using AF on any camera.

I'm finding the Sony A7 profiles included with Lightroom 5.3RC to be great. They seem to perfectly match the color balance from the camera JPEG styles. And if matching is not the goal, the Huelight profiles from colorfidelity are out and give great results.

Not sure if this has been covered in one of the A7 threads, but Tim Ashley did a nice writeup on the FE 35:

Anyone who has an A7 or A7r already have an idea of how long charging the battery takes?

Also, is the battery life any better on the A7 than the A7r?
