John, of course it is the photographer together with the subject matter that makes a great shot. Keep in mind there are really only about 20 or so people who ever post in this thread. That isn't a very large group, and I think there are several of us who would really like to keep the thread going and are therefore less picky about what they post to this thread than to other threads here on FM. I know that is true for me. Of course you will see a lot more fabulous images on a thread like the Sony FE thread in which several hundred people post, than on a thread in which 20 or so people post. So no doubt part of what we are seeing here with images is a result of just huge differences in the number of people shooting in each thread. That said even if my images are mediocre, which they often are, I do think there is some very strong shots too. Just not as many or as frequent as they are on other threads....Show more →
Steve, I don't know if you are the forum moderator or the thread moderator (if such a thing exists) but I wouldn't let this statement stand. We had some kind of melt down over at DPR on the medium format forum yesterday. I think one of the moderators quit over it and a bunch of posts were deleted. It was all started by a thread asking for thoughts on Sony vs GFX the author of which not knowing the history of FF fanboys taking their shots at the format almost from day one of the forum creation.
Your answer sort of agrees with what he is saying.
I have not had time to go out and see what my 645Z is capable of but, In the interest of keeping this thread alive,
these are from my days with the xpan scanned on a not adequate enough epson flatbed.

I didn't take John's comment above as saying anything about 44X33 vs. FF 35mm. To me he seems to only be talking about the images on this thread and how good they are. My only agreement is that some of the images (and I was thinking about some of mine in particular) are fairly mediocre. I do think that this thread doesn't as consistently produce wonderful images as say the Sony FE thread, but as I said I think that can be attributed to the relatively small number of photographers posting to this thread. I think some who post here are excellent photographers, but there are just simply a lot more excellent photographers posting to the big Sony FE thread.
For the record (and I have said that before), I do think the 44 X 33 format when cropped to 4 X 3 or squarer produces IQ that is better than FF 35mm and 44X33 has about the same advantage over FF 35mm as FF 35mm has over APS-C. That is my experience at least. Note I am not a moderator here either on the forum or on the thread (whatever that would mean).
My point was not about formats per se. Imagine me going to the Sony forum and complaining about the 900 pages of drek I would have to plough through to find one or two jewels.
