Unfortunately I have enough evidence that some FM members were victims of fraud perpetrated by a scammer with a bank account in Canada.
To protect yourself, DO NOT use Bank Transfers of any other type of uninsured payment when conducting a transaction here, ESPECIALLY if the recipient is in Canada.
We are working on a way to combat this issue but in the meantime, the best protection is for you to ONLY use insured payment methods like Paypal, Google Checkout or Amazon.

Well that stinks. Do we have a specific location? Vancouver perhaps? I'm actually more than willing to give said scammer a visit. I have done it a few times before with success and I will do it again.

Perhaps more importantly, we need to educate people to STOP GIVING OUT THEIR PASSWORDS to this site... there have been a number of these scams involving hacked FM accounts in the past few months.
Some common sense rules:
1) DO NOT blindly respond to emails appearing to be from this site asking you to log in and enter your password - Fred will (presumably) never ask you to do that.
2) If a seller claims to be in Canada but his profile shows he registered in the US or any other country, DO NOT send any money (not even PayPal).

Really nice - it's already very difficult to give seller's/buyers across the line confidence in shipping/buying across the line. This doesn't help at all. We're not all bad guys up here...hopefully this t*rd gets flushed soon...cheers from the Great White North.

Yes, I'm one of the victims (I'm out $1400).....but a joke is in order (I haven't laughed in a few days). The reason for the Canadian scammer is simply.....it's all the fault of you Americas. The people of Canada had taken a vote and we plan on scamming any and all Americans until you let us win the Stanley Cup again. Sadly, some fellow Canadian mistaken me for an American because I'm a HUGE New York Ranger fan.

In all seriousness, I have sold some very expensive gear to Canada and even to New Zealand. I only accept money order and bank checks. I'm easily verified on Google and have stellar feedback here on FM and Google. More importantly, I'll always agree to a Facetime chat or phone call to confirm the sale. Be careful with brand new members on the forum with zero feedback. This last scammer was a brand new account with zero feedback and his pricing was too good to be true. Use common sense and you will be okay, most folks are good people with good intentions.

Sorry for your luck. If you ever find your way out here in the Northwest, you're more than welcome to borrow my 14-24mm.
I'll be following your thread closely for any new developments. Cheers!

So you'll help him feel better about getting ripped off by ripping off someone yourself? However you rationalize it, be fully aware that distributing or sharing actions you've purchased is stealing.

I'm just stating the facts. A few members got scammed by this same individual and his location is Canada. The local police is involved and I'm hoping we will eventually be able to catch this guy.
This should not be a discouragement to deal with fellow Canadian members. It's just a warning to never send uninsured payments.

Wow It only takes one.... Well I hope this doesn't sour the rest of us upstanding and high feedback members who like me have traded many thousands of dollars across the border with no hiccups. Again as always, check feedback. I will still do business with you southern peoples but I always prefer to keep it in the country if I can. Sometimes we just don't have the population base to produce the hidden gems and transactions I am looking for. Thanks for the warning anyway Fred, I feel safest at this site of all the sites I do online trading on.

A few things to add...
To be fully protected -
When buying using PayPal don't pay using gift payment, link a credit card and pay using that to have a couple layers of protection.
When selling an item, require signature on anything over $250 and only ship to a verified address...
With both of those things in place you should be nearly completely protected.
Great advise. Also be wary of certificated checks. They can be fraudulent.
Been posting on Craigs list and it is amazing the number of people who want to pay w/ paypal (foreign stolen cc) and ship international Just wonder if anyone is that dumb. perhaps so!

My biggest fear is what appears to have transpired in this transaction - a well-established FM member with 40+ feedback either went rogue or had his account hijacked. The latter is the scariest because it compromises the integrity and usefulness of the feedback system. To combat this it would be useful to have some type of verification system to confirm the original FM'er is in possession of his own account. Not sure what the implementation would look like but I'm thinking along the lines of how gmail detects suspicious account logins and uses a secondary means to verify the account holder, such as a text message with verification code to the registered phone number.
