TIP OF A BALL-POINT PEN. 40D + 100 2.8 macro + Sigma 2x TC + 37 mm ET, 1 sec (I love inanimate subjects! ), f/13, ISO 320, MF via Live View, ball head/tripod, resized full frame.
Romy, those are very interesting macro images, and technically really well done. Well, I can not keep up with that kind of a photo genre, so I'll just post more BIF shots taken with 1DX + 300 f/2.8 IS MkII + 2xTC MkIII.

Art Morris, who is a pretty famous wildlife/bird photographer, swears by the 2x TCs on his super teles. If I had a fast, big tele I would own and use a 2x on it.
I figure that is only an interim situation. As soon as A.Morris gets his hands on new 200-400L, I betcha the zoom will become the best ever supertelephoto option available from Canon.

It already is the best ever, Peter!
Well, I do like the concept and I think it'll be a stellar performer. The question is - would it be the right choice as compared to other long glass like the 500/4 II...
(which is exactly the kind of question I will be asking myself).

I'd like to rephrase the title of the thread to focus on the imminent arrival of my new lens.
"Who likes the 2xTC III on the 400 DO?
I really can't say that I particularly care for any TC on my DO, much less the 2x. I think I can produce equal or better images with digital enlargement than with the 2x TC. I used to own the 2xII and it just got no use because I found it so disappointing on the DO. I used the 2xIII for a week with the 200/2 and 400DO, and returned it, just sticking with the 1.4xIII (which I also virtually never use).
I have the 1.4x III and think it is great. I sold my 2X II to fund it. The 2X II just didn't cut it in terms of clarity and focus speed for me . . . I might consider version III of the 2X because it is apparently significantly better.

Dark monotone birds aren't easy AF targets even against the plain sky. Catching these in flight with shimmering water in the background (that tries to steal the attention of the AF sensor) is among the toughest BIF jobs, especially with a doubler mounted. Very well done, Peter!
This colorful bird (about 5-3/4 inches total length) was perched in the canopy, and even the Sigmonster's 800 mm was not enough to fill the frame. A doubler had to be used, and manual focus before the advent of Live View was a bit tougher.

If you'd like to Pypal $50 to me, I will test 400 DO + 2xTC MkIII for ya.
Thanks for a kind and gentle offer, but I only deal with GratisPals :- )
I suspect you already tried the combination.
How about exchange of an expert opinion for my intensive ego massage?
I'll post some juicy accolades under your next postings : -)

Nah, "juicy accolades" and "great capture" are not worth much in my books. One can get a dime a dozen of those on the N&W forum for just about any kind of picture posted.
