I liked the colors and chaos of the paint photo, so I went with a slight simplification filter from Topaz and combined a bit of "Sunlight" filter from Nik, then messed with curves and whatnot. My goal was to give it a slightly smeared / painterly look but still keep some of the dark edges (for a bit of grit).

Wonder why nobody has cropped the dunes photo to eliminate the sky + clouds. Maybe even a 16:9 crop, for a cinematic-y look.
To me, the dunes and variable shadow/light is the focus, but the bright sky and inconsistent cloud shapes and tonality really distract and overpower the best part of the image. Kinda like having a delicate cut of nigiri and then submerging it in soy sauce, before heaping on a slice of ginger and a smear of wasabi.
Also, it's in balancing the two characters of the image-- the dunes and then the sky-- where so many processing issues are arising.

@justruss. Fr me, I like having the bright sky to give a bit of context to the image. Granted, a just-dunes shot would probably be cool too and even work as an abstract, but the sky gave some context to the reflections on the sand and a bit of a color contrast.
In looking further, i think a tight crop with a sliver of sky (no clouds) gives a great result, and manages to keep the colors while negating much of the balance issue.
