Definitely your usage may be different, but I primarily purchased 300mm F2.8 AFS-II (Not VR) to capture candid portraits. In comparison of this lens I find 200mm F2 VR II , not only more usable. I also believe that pictures appear slightly more beautiful with 200mm F2 VR II.
Yet, I am thinking of selling 300mm F2.8 AFS-II but I am not able to convince myself for not selling it, even though it is far less used in comparison of 200mm F2 VR II. I believe that I might need two long range fast Auto Focus Lenses for some school / college sports event.
I prefer to use 300mm F2.8 AFS-II hand holding far more than 200mm F2, but resulting images forces me to use 200mm F2 instead.
Presumably you find 200mm usable length that is why you posted this question, please go ahead. I love this lens....Show more →
Sell 300 2.8, buy 1.4 TC and you have 99% of the IQ of the 300. 200 2.0 with a 400 or 500 or 600 (depending on weight, needs and available funds) is a killer combo if you have a 1.4 TC. I don't understand why people get a 200, 300, 400, 500 AND 600. I used 4/5 of those lenses and kinda came to that conclusion (only own the 200, because I don't need anything longer at the moment).
I made it through 95 pages of this discussion and was so impressed with my discipline for not ordering this lens on the spot. However, on the 96th page I finally broke down and the UPS truck is delivering the chubby tomorrow. I fought the good fight but gave into NAS.
I rationalized it by selling my 70-200 2.8 and 15-30 Tamron which were my last two zoom lenses. Primes only from here on out.

Sell the 70-200 as soon as you can, its price is about to take a dive when the new 70-200 is announced tonight.

Brown truck showed up...before even ringing the doorbell the driver got off the truck with the "sorry we missed you" sticker in his hand thinking nobody was home...I opened the door and he went back to the truck to get my box.
Immediately stuck it on my D810 and chased the cat around the house for some test shots. First touch of auto focus button and it immediately snapped to focus faster than any lens I have ever owned and from that point on I've had a big stupid grin glued to my face. Just based on autofocus speed and test shots the remorse I had about selling the 70-200 f2.8 is completely gone.
Will be interesting to see how this pairs with the D500 this weekend for some action/sports shooting.
I wanted to buy the 105mm E. But for the same price i found a used 200mm f2.0 VR.
I am so happy, but wat a lens.
Just did a wedding this weekend with it. After the wedding i realized that the lens had to be fine tuned for the AF :-( He needed -13 on my D750. But never the less the most pictures are sharp.

New member here. Recently traded in my trusted 70-200mm F/2.8 VRII and an almost new unloved and mostly unused 300mm F4 PF to get a VR1 edition of this lens - so far so love. Thought I'd miss the flexibility of the 70-200mm more than I have, but the it's yet to be an issue.
