My love/hate relationship with the RX1 resumes!
I have been without a working RX1 for some time now because both of mine are broken. However, thanks to a generous friend, who sent me his RX1 on a long-term loan -- he put it aside after buying an RX1RII -- I now have a working camera in my possession again.
I did have to disassemble it to clean the sensor (which proved to be surprisingly easy to do, btw) and I will replace the slightly scuffed LCD with a new one -- purchased for less than $20, including shipping from Hong Kong, via eBay, so why not? -- but it's in otherwise excellent condition and works perfectly.
For now, anyway. (I added that last part because, in my experience, every RX1 will eventually break in one way or another, hence the "hate" part of my relationship with them.)
And here is the first photo -- well, snapshot -- I took with it during our morning walk yesterday:
After making do with several other camera / lens combos for much longer than I liked, it's good to be back home again!

That's why your friend let you borrowed it. You are cleaning the sensor, changing LCD and all.
I've opened the RX1RII once and it was not that hard but putting it back together the exact same way it was before..Not sure.
All the images here show the strength of the RX1 (or Mk II) and it's rendering. The only other wide angle I've seen sharing similar rendering is the new GM 24/1.4. (And still not quite the same)
The Sonnar 35/2's rendering is so butter smooth even in this very challenging background with lots of foliage, especially in the case of the first image as it's closer to the subject.
It would be so ironic if Zeiss's new 35/2 Distagon (ZX1) can't match this rendering. If it's any indication, the Batis 40/2 can't come even close.

Are you doing the Sunny 16 rule adapted to f/11? I did that once with the RX1RII and loved the results, especially when timing was crucial.
What is the Sunny 16 rule? These were zone focused using the rule of 3rds grid. Got the idea from Mattias Burling on youtube (?t=247)

Do you think it is as simple as the Sonnar design vs a Distagon, as far as the rendering. Because I have been looking for a lens to equal the 35/2 Sonnar and have not found it yet. I love the CV40 but it still does not fill that void.

Many think that the special rendering is only possible because the lens was designed for a very small flange distance. I honestly don't know what it is but have not found another lens with equal rendering. The Sony 35/1.4 ZA came the closest.

Actually, so far as he is concerned, he gave me the camera.
But I'm not comfortable accepting such a costly gift, so as far as I am concerned, it's a long-term loan and when I'm finished with it, I'll either return it to him or sell it and give him the proceeds.
