I always enjoy your photos, since I also live in Berks County and also use an RX1R.
The historical information was very interesting, since my ancestors on my mom's side came from the Palatinate. I know that they were among the first to arrive here, but I am not sure about which boat they sailed on. They settled in the area near Landis Store.Your covered bridge photo looks very familiar, but I can't remember where it is located.
Glad to hear that you are recovering OK.
Rick
Thanks, Rick!
What a coincidence - two guys with RX1r's here in nowhereville Berks County!
Yes, lots of PA Dutch hail from the Palatinate area, but my family was catholic, which I always thought odd for a PA Dutch family. Turns out one of my ancestors, Georg Scheaffer, was a "Hessian" solider captured at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 and brought to Reading as a POW. He was kept with the other "Hessian" prisoners on what is still called Hessian Hill and sent out to various farms, forges, mills, etc to work - helped dig the mill race through 1,500' of solid rock at Charming Forge, for example.
He was not actually from Hesse. He was a one of the few riflemen ("Jagers"). The vast majority of German mercenaries carried smoothbore muskets. The riflemen were recruited (more like kidnapped and forced into service) in the Bavarian alps, where there was still big game and thus a rifle culture. Like most Bavarians, and unlike most PA Dutch, he was catholic. To the "English", however, all German-speaking people were "Hessians". When the treaty was signed in 1783, the Hessian king would not pay to repatriate the prisoners. Georg wanted to stay here anyway. He married a local PA Dutch girl he met while working on one of the farms and here I am!
Georg is buried at the Schwartzwald Church, not far from here. A very rare Hessian Jager rifle that was captured at Saratoga is on display at the West Point museum. It might have actually even been his. I was allowed access to it; and built a perfect replica of it some years ago.
Well, this is supposed to be a photo site, so here's a gratuitous pic of my lane early this morning right after a big thunder storm:

Hey Greg, thanks for the history info. Ancestors on my dad's side came from Germany via a boat from England and settled on a farm in Coatesville PA. They bought the land from William Penn and are buried in the Quaker cemetery there. Seltzer derives from a German spring in Prussia. How we got Seltzer water. The old farmhouse is still standing in Coatesville.
Anyway, glad you getting back out there with your RX1R!

Unfortunately my RX1R's sensor is in urgent need for cleaning. Any experience with sending in the camera - in the US? I hear about Sony subpar customer service and would love to hand it to a more reliable third-party.
Thanks!
Sharing earbuds in the smoldering NYC subway - must be real love!

Geez, I don't visit this forum enough. Really outstanding images and such a variety. Whenever I go on a shoot or out for fun the Sony comes along. Here are a handful of photos from a short hike here in Lanikai Hawaii. Great views and lots of activity make for fun photo ops. By the way we have a couple of hurricanes on the way over the next couple of weeks. We'll see what happens.
