i know the feeling. i went to the beach and the forest today intending to exorcise some of my alts on my NEX, but instead i shot almost exclusively with the rx1.

shots from a bus that definitely don't show off how sharp the lens is:

I don't understand it. I have an A7r but I have yet to see anything that matches the RX1 image stop for stop. I am not letting go of my RX1. Here are a few recent shots from the past few days. Nothing special but satisfying in their own way. The first two shots are taken from an airplane window over the Grand Canyon at high altitude. Lots of built in challenge with the airplane windows and the haze issues outside. The second pair are just available light on the kitchen counter at at F/4.

Dale, I agree your comment about RX1.

The images look fidelity to me. I don't feel the same way with any other lens. I can say my Leica R with D700 rendering beautiful,(which is by far still my favorite lens/camera combo ) FE55 extreme sharp with A7/R, but I can't say they are fidelity, infocus plane, maybe, but not the scene my eyes seeing. It(RX1) is a combined effect with sensor, color, 35mm focal length, and lens rendering. With the more time with it, the more I appreciate Sony's effort.

Though, sometime, fidelity is not my goal!

It is a patient crow, I was able to experiment the composition. we even communicate each other with eyes contact

ha, you got lucky he didn't decide to poop on you in that first shot.

one from me, i wasn't expecting him so i didn't have a good shutter speed set for panning. kinda like the nervous look though:

and as promised, some more monochrome sunset photographers, one seems to be a fellow NEX shooter:

Got the Ricoh GW3 for my GR and figured would give it a try on the RX1 and its surprisingly good if you stop down a bit pretty much up to the corners. Gives about a 24mm FoV as well (Given the RX1 lens is a bit wider than the 35mm as marked)

Its been snowing pretty steady here so haven't been really able to conduct any proper test, but seems to actually edge out the GR in terms of detail due to the RX1's MP advantage and cleaner high ISO in the informal comparisons I've done. This isn't suggesting the GR isn't good either, its just that the RX1 has a real advantage at ISO800 and higher. GW3 works amazingly well on the GR it was intended for too of course.

If you've got a GW3 defiantly give it a try on your RX1, its pretty darn good, and a good margin wider FoV. Screws right onto the 49mm and really doesn't feel off balanced either, at least with my Fotodiox grip attached. Looks like it can also take 62mm filters.

Give it a try

Wasn't snowing, and a little warmer today, so I walked over the little cemetery across the street from my house (nice peaceful spot where I do most of my camera testing) to try out the Ricoh GW3 0.75 conversion lens a bit more.

These are just straight out of the camera JPEG files with no corrections for distortion or vignetting, just presenting to give an idea of the changes in FoV

First we've got the RX1 at its native 35mm focal length (which based upon other 35's I've owned, seems to be a little wider than 35)

Next we've got the RX1 with the GW3, which I'd say equates to about a 25mm-ish actual FoV.

Finally, for an additional frame of reference with a known wider focal length, here is the 28mm (equiv) FoV from the Ricoh GR

I may post some samples of edges, etc., at full rez if there is really that much interest, but, that sort of thing always carries with it a lot of criticisms on methodology etc, so probably will leave it just to something for my own eyes and for me to evaluate based upon my own needs and IQ requirements.

I will say its pretty darn good, not just for a conversion lens, but for an actual native focal length lens, which is saying something. Very little distortion and it remains quite sharp basically across the entire frame. Rioch built one heck of a conversion lens.

Its of course a little difficult to evaluate between my known 28mm cameras like the RX100 and GR because of the differences in megapixels. The GR is just 16meg, so the 24meg RX1 can resolve a bit higher, in addition to being A LOT better at higher ISO than either the GR or the RX100.

During some informal testing late in the afternoon yesterday, I was shooting the RX1 at f8, w/ GW3, and that had be at ISO1600 or so. Still very clean, as RX1 users know, but the GR, shot natively at 28mm equiv, at F5.6 and ISO800 already started to get pretty noisy and really starts to lose detail, so the RX1 gave a marginally better image even taking into account the conversion lens.

Point of buying the GW3 is to give me 21mm equiv on the GR though, rather than turning the RX1 into a 25-ish mm camera that has to be shot at f8. That being said, it does look pretty handy to be able to just screw the GW3 quickly onto the RX1 and get a little more width for some shooting situations.

I don't know, at this point, if I would really suggest anyone buy a GW3 just for the RX1, but it works well, and if you often wish your RX1 was a little wider for landscapes, it could be worth trying out.

thanks gary!

millsart – can we a pic of what it looks like on camera? also, how does it perform at f/2 centrally and what does the bokeh look like in such situations? i think i'd be more likely to use such an adapter for low light people shooting than landscape. for landscape i'd just stitch together 2-4 images with the straight rx1.
