Only the earliest IS lenses (think 300mm f4 L IS) require the IS to be turned off on a tripod. The 100mm f2.8L IS macro has one of the newest IS systems, with tripod detection.

Thank you Don, I've the 300 f4L IS and use it with extension tubes quite often, just got in the habit of turning IS off when using supports. I'll give my other IS glass a try with IS on or set to option 2, great info

I called once when having an issue with a 100/2 that went back and forth a few times for calibration. The service manager I spoke with in Irvine did not know about the existence of date codes.

I have the 24-105 4L IS and 15-85 IS and both need IS disabled for use on a stable tripod. The 15-85 IS is a fairly recent design (with auto detect for panning) and basically ruins every image if IS is left enabled while on a rock solid tripod. I know because I've forgotten to disable IS far too many times...

Of course if you use a light travel tripod in trade winds leaving IS enabled actually greatly improves IQ. The difficulty is judging whether there is enough wind or vibration from bridge traffic to warrant leaving IS enabled.

This link will tell you more about IS than you ever knew:

http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/infobank/lenses/image_stabilisation.do

page 1

"Image stabilisation is effective with movement from 0.5Hz to 20Hz (1Hz is one movement cycle per second). This will cope not only with situations from simple camera shake (0.5Hz to 3Hz), but also the engine vibrations encountered when shooting from a moving vehicle or helicopter (10Hz to 20Hz).

There is no reduction in the optical performance of the lens"

Page 2: IS Mode 3

"IS Mode 3 was announced with the EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses, and is also in the EF500mm f/4L IS II USM and EF600mm f/4L IS II USM telephoto lenses. IS Mode 3 takes the benefits of standard IS (effective for both horizontal and vertical camera motion) but, instead of it being active all the time, it only activates when you fully press the shutter button to take an image. It is especially useful for sports photography where you are likely to be moving between subjects quickly.

In IS Mode 1 this can create a bump or jump within the viewfinder as the IS motor races to keep up with extensive lens movements. Instead, by not activating until the shutter button is fully pressed it saves the system trying to compensate for random, rapid lens motion and only compensates at the point you are taking an image.

Recent lenses also have the IS system up and running within 0.5 second of partial pressure on the shutter button, rather than the 1 second delay with earlier lenses.
Keep in mind that image stabilisation only reduces the effect of camera shake − it has no effect on subject movement."

Page 3

"With some of the earlier lenses, you need to switch the IS off when using a tripod. The lack of movement confuses the system and the image starts to jump around the viewfinder. However, using a tripod in high wind or with super telephoto lenses, often results in some camera movement, and the IS system can be invaluable.Later IS models are able to sense the use of a tripod and automatically disable the IS, if necessary."

Page 4

This chart lists amount of gain, modes, and tripod detection for nearly all versions of IS. It doesn’t list 200mm f2L IS, which has 5 levels of gain.

If you look at the actual tests that Roger conducted, then you will see this quote without the context is a bit misleading. The 6D had a standard deviation in the test of 28, which is noticeably larger than the 17 of the 5D MKIII and the 1DX, but it is better than the 5D MKII which was at 38.5. In fact, when you look at the numbers on Roger's test the 6D is just about halfway between the 5D MKII and the 5D MKIII. On top of that the 6D did very well on 9 of the 11

Could you give us/me a link, Steve?
Most of your quotes I can not find in "A quick 6D AF test" (the link mentioned above.
Thank you.

The chart on page 4 is informative although it may have an error or two. The EF-S15-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is listed as having only one mode (not good for panning) and tripod auto-detect. According to the lens manual, it auto-detects panning and switches to panning mode. It is possible the tripod detect feature is broken on my copy but it definitely ruins most tripod images if IS is left enabled.

Here's a typical tripod (Bogan 3001 Tripod, RC-1 remote) shot I took that was ruined by IS (pixel level):

And the same settings with IS disabled:

Don, that is a useful link. However, in it I see three pages only, don't know where p.4 went ?

Furthermore, just when 200 f/2 IS was introduced, some Canon's sources spoke about 4 stop IS, and some quoted 5 stop IS.

Well, when I got the lens, its IS looked more like 4 than 5 stops worth to me.

Uh, he said it in his answer to my question in the comment section. I was busy this afternoon. I just had to reread it. Thank you for reminding.

Peter, I'm using firefox browser, and I get all 4 pages.

Here is another Canon Europe link, that discusses 5 gain on 200mm f2L IS:

http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/technical/image_stabilization_lenses.do

"The EF200mm f/2L IS USM lens features a five-stop Image Stabilizer system "

+1 Ralph, some fashion/action shots please

FM will get action shots from these shaky hands and the 6D sometime next year, I'll take a few surfing shots with it and my 40D, and compare the AF systems. I was watching Canon's demo of the WiFi and smartphone and my lady joined in, she asked if it would work with a tablet as well, I grinned, she said "clean up the gear you don't need and sell it, go ahead and get the 6D when it comes out, get the Nexus 10 tablet also!" I'm stoked

Tablet 1st (it can make me $$$), I'm still going to wait a bit for production reviews of the 6D and 24-70 f4L IS to come out...see real life images/movies before I jump in...I may just keep my ole trusty 24-85 for a bit...save for the 400L instead

I've a few things that need sorting this winter and a new 100L IS macro to test, hummingbird and seed feeders are going up this winter for our little tweeters, we'll see what pops up! I'll do my best this spring/summer to image a few pijuns...including in-flight and the walkers; bikini types!

Jerry, you've got the green light for 6D, and that's excellent.
With some seed and nectar feeders you might be able to get bird shots using your 100L, and I am sure they will be da bomb. With some clever positioning and the birds getting habituated to your presence, much could be possible.

I think 6D will be very fast and powerful on focus acquisition with the center AF point. However, subsequent focus maintenance and tracking could be challenging, because one can not do the AF point expansion around the center point. One always has the option of using the auto AF pt. selection (all points), however, that has had a tendency to get you into weeds on past camera models.

Hi Ralph,

Here is the link in which Roger does the same test with a bunch of other cameras
