The "philosophy" (if there is one) seems to meet my expectations. Best IQ at highest ISO. I do not do sports nor wildlife "action". And I see the manipulation of a pictures focus as my part as a photographer. AF is mainly needed, when the human (my) eye is not any longer reliable. One of my imo best shots where done without AF. Seeing the motive, raising the camera while prefocusing, deciding about composition and setting the focus perfectly ... all done in less than a second.

No it's not. It's FF but not a premium bit of kit, the 5D3 and 1DX are the premium bodies.
The sensor might constitute premium given it's FF but the rest of the 6D is light weight entry level, pull the FF sensor out and you have a 60D with minor tweaks. That's it's appeal, $2.1K FF body, not $3.5K or $7K for the premium body.
And, that $1400 or so can be used for more L glass. I'm guessing the 6D's price will a bit less than $2.1K by mid next year just as the 5D3 has dropped, I doubt by as much percentage wise, but perhaps to $1,800...that's not a premium body IMO

It is funny to see how D800 went down in 9 month about over 20% on mspr and the D600 did same in just 2 month ... starting with - 10% of MSPR at the release day one day after 6D was announced at afewer price. Given the fact that 5D III went down about only 14% in less few time than D800 I am not hopefull D6 will go down fast ... but I saw a first offer of a 6D bundle with 24-70 at about 270$ saving ...
I would say they are quite similar, rather than the same. Now, whether the focusing system of 6D can perform better is another story. From what I've read, it should be so.

We will read more and (more important) see for our own very soon. It would not make much sense to me to improof the sensor in DR and noise at highest ISO settings over 5D III level and give the AF system the the same status of a 5D II, imo.

Ralph, my thoughts exactly on the 6D, the bundles are where the savings will be, maybe a few hundred at best...but that saving could be an upgrade to the 1.4x III T/C! Who knows what pricing we'll be tempted with this silly season
I've only one decision kit wise, get the older 24-105 or the newer 24-70, is the hybrid IS worth the loss of extra 35mm in reach?! Either kit would be great and would pretty much round out my f4L glass

Hello Jerry,
I want a 6D, 24-70 4.0 L IS USM AND 70-200 4.0 L IS USM bundle at about 4000 €.
And I do not really care about the outer focus points ...
Ralph, yeah the outer points are just a nice to have, I'm a center point recompose shooter also...can't really use the outer points or the newer AF systems due to my still fingers
As for glass, the 17-40 f4L, 70-200 f4L IS are in me bag already, my biggest problem is the little but oh so nice 24-85 I already have. It is an absolute gem, not L grade, but I've shot with it since 98 when I got my 1st EOS3, it's not much bigger than the 50 f1.4 and just fits my style...
I'm evaluating the hybrid IS of the 100 f2.8L IS macro; I broke down and got it, and do like it for handheld close-up and regular shooting. It seems a bit better than IS on the 70-200 f4L IS, but I've only shot about 100 images with it and 50% were static table top tripod macro shots with IS off. I don't find the new L IS any sharper than my non-L, but there seems to be slightly better bokeh, which I do like...IMHO, the extra $$$ for the IS is worth it, as I prefer handheld shooting and the freedom it gives me; supports and my wheels just don't work great together
I'm going to keep my 40D and slim down my kit, getting rid of the 50D and a few lenses, they may help fund the 24-70, having a mid range zoom with a good IS would help greatly...we'll see what the future will bring!

A 5D III/1D X AF system is a "nice to have" for me, too. But I stopped purchasing expensive things because I would like to have them. Next to this in a camera I prefere a viewfinder that is free from all "gimmicks" and lets me see, what I shoot.
I was okay with 5D IIs Center AF point and recompose. An even more reliable one would be fine, an much advanced one (all compared to 5D II) at lower light would be great for me. Now it looks like using ISO 25k gets a no brainer (again for me) the 4.0 L range in combination with 6D IQ might cover about 95% of my standard needs. The rest would easily available in renting a lens, if I need it. This offers much freedom for my biz. Right now I doen´t do sports, BIF, macro. I do people and documentations in main. And I want to enhance travelling in the future. The combination mentioned would be a nice setup in weight, too.

Obviously that depends on your uses - focus recompose works fine when you are using relatively narrow apertures. But when you go to larger apertures with shallow DOF, focus recompose doesn't work well (specially on FF cameras with even shallower DOF) . So for anyone shooting at large apertures having good outer AF points is more than just a "nice to have" feature.

From whatever little I've heard about 6D, its centre AF point has 3x the light sensitivity of 5DMkII. That is simply huge in terms of potential AF responsiveness, speed of AF acquisition as well as tracking. Those of us who use long lenses routinely know how challenging a recovery from extreme defocus is, and how performance limiting that behaviour usually is. Improvements in AF sensor light sensitivity should have a direct positive effect on defocus handling as well as focusing distance limiter settings.......which in turn means better AF performance......more keepers. Furthermore, the benefits of maintaining AF in very low ambient light are quite obvious.
I think it is unlikely that Canon would use such a good AF sensor and then abandon performance benefits that such sensor offers. Therefore, my gut feeling is that the 6D AF performance with the centre AF sensor will be way ahead of any pre 1DX (5DMkIII) camera.

Roger mentioned the LRs test did not respect low light capabilities.

The bottom line is the 6D AF is about identical to what we saw with the 5D II as far as center point accuracy.
So, yeah, I wish the 6D a better AF system. If it did, I would have bought a 6D already.
No surprises, unfortunately.
If you look at the actual tests that Roger conducted, then you will see this quote without the context is a bit misleading. The 6D had a standard deviation in the test of 28, which is noticeably larger than the 17 of the 5D MKIII and the 1DX, but it is better than the 5D MKII which was at 38.5. In fact, when you look at the numbers on Roger's test the 6D is just about halfway between the 5D MKII and the 5D MKIII. On top of that the 6D did very well on 9 of the 11 data points in Roger's test and quite poorly on just one. This suggests that the 6D is doing pretty well. It actually has a better score than anything except the 5D MKIII the 1DX, and the 1DIV. It even just beats the 1DsMKIII on this test. Roger can answer for himself, but I think what he is emphasizing in the quote is that the 6D does not have the clearly superior consistency in focus of the 5D MKIII and 1DX, but it is not unreasonable to note that in his tests the 6D did noticeably better than the 5D MKII (and I say that as a 5D MKII owner). He also clearly makes his claim just about autofocus consistency, not about low light performance (where the 6D is purported to be much better than the 5D MKII). We also don't know about servo performance, and lots of other things. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that from what we know at this point it does look like the 6D autofocus performance will be at least a modest upgrade over the 5D MKII and probably a big upgrade in low light centre focus point shooting.

StillFingerz: 50% were static table top tripod macro shots with IS off
Only the earliest IS lenses (think 300mm f4 L IS) require the IS to be turned off on a tripod. The 100mm f2.8L IS macro has one of the newest IS systems, with tripod detection.
Steve Spenser: ...We also don't know about [6D] servo performance....
On AI servo the 5DII can use the center cross point, plus 6 assist points, two of which are also cross sensors. I as I understand it, the 6D has one active point in AI servo. The 6D may turn out to have good AI servo performance, but on paper, the 5DII slaughters it. It is not even close to being the same.

Actually, based upon my tests of using and not using the 6 assist points in servo, I do disable the assist points; I had a significantly higher hit rate with them OFF.
