Mine was not a focus issue, I use live view to focus at 1.4 manually. My D800E has no left focus issue. The center was scary sharp, the right side was almost as sharp and the left side was very fuzzy, I expect some asymmetry with most lenses on the 800E but nothing like this. My 14-24 and 70-200 are pretty much right on symmetry wise.
Samples onna D800 as requested....couple in relative darkness, AF was brisk and accurate.
This lil guy is constant motion, so I couldn't believe the SS I got away with on the first
How is it for video using the focus ring manually?
Some lenses are well suited for such and others aren't.
I understand that the aperture can only be changed using the dials (no manual aperture). How is the focus throw? Is it smooth and provides enough control to focus at the shallow DOF at 1.4?

The focus ring is well damped and smooth, but only provides 90 degrees for the full throw.

Thanks, I'll have to check on that.
I don't like to have to rotate too much nor too little. What was your impression of the ability to focus manually?
To be honest, I didn't give it a critical test. I rarely focus manually for anything but product and macro shots, so I only tried it with this lens to see how it felt, and check the range. As you might have seen from my post earlier in the thread, my copy has AF problems, and I'm awaiting a new one.
And I spent all day yesterday waiting for the box to arrive! never left the house...
And there it was, the UK equivalent of USPS decided to put a fake "attempted delivery" so that they could cut their saturday short and leave work earlier. No lens until monday...

Gotta love the post office
That sucks, man. Hopefully a 'wide open' smile from my youngest will get ya thru the day
Sigma (A) I don't leave home w/o it.
I have to co-sign TM on this one. I just got mine on Tuesday and it's an incredible piece of glass. Focus seems even snappier than the Sigma 85 1.4, and it almost feels better in the hand.
Here's a few shots from a show with the worst lighting guy ever.
On the diglloyd post, there is mild 'nervous' bokeh in quite a lot of the shots, woodland pictures are often the toughest to get smooth bokeh though. His review is in the early stages, no comment on flare, af etc yet,

I'd also be interested in this. The sigma 85mm f/1.4 has probably the worst manual focus ring of any lens I've ever used, even though it is geared down the focus throw is minuscule and feels bad even compared to other af lenses. It also confuses me by going the 'right' way
