Very nice captures there Will...This new Sigma 35 looks like a winner. I will absolutely get one after I recover from the shock of the recent Chubby purchase
Has anyone had any problems with this lens and back focusing with a speedlight attached? I know, I know, I know, I should attach some pics but from f1.4-2 the lens is perfect without flash but when I tested both of my SB-900s I notice that the lens is back focusing. I might be sending it back.
It's an issue with the AF assist beam on the SB-900. I had this exact same problem with a 35mm f/1.4G and SB-910, as well as with the 85mm f/1.4G and 24-70mm f/2.8G. I had to turn the AF assist beam off and then I had no issues. It's frustrating to say the least. Oddly, no issues with my SB-600.
How does this lens compare with the nikon 35 1.4g? I'm loving the pictures I see from the nikon version, so I'm still not sure which one I'd want in the future.

My Nikon version didn't really get sharp 'til around f1.8 and the AF was meh in low light. This Sigma (A) comes
outta the box sharp wide open and so far I'm seein' brisk AND accurate AF As for the build well, it's 3 strikes...
and the Nikon's out. It's a new ballgame, folks. Oh, and money saved...priceless! ~600 more reasons to switch.
I got to play a bit this morning with the lens. Amazing pop and clarity, amazing.
I did notice that the images, as I increased the camera to subject distance, weren't sharp though. Backfocus. I put the camera on a tripod and did a quick test with an interferometry pattern projected on a big TV screen. In order to match LV with regular AF I need around -18 to -19. I used various distances. All my shooting at f1.4.
This is the first time I've have had to really fine tune a lens. All my previous lenses have been tested using this same procedure and have needed no more than +/- 2 to get them at peak.
I will do more testing when I leave work and see if this hold for other apertures. If it goes out of -20 then I guess I'll need to get another copy. A bit bummed about this but will see when I further check..
Notwithstanding, it is an amazing lens, even wide open..
No worries, Gustavo. While my D3/D700 were at "0" the D800/D7K needed -18/-17 respectively.
I can certainly live with THAT for the IQ. Interesting, how the 'old' sensors let one simply mount and shoot.

I know you are right Monkey
I just need to confirm that I need no more microadjust thingy when I stop down the aperture. If all is good, I don't mind the -19 as long as it delivers...

I'd get another copy, if you change camera bodies in the future (or sell it to someone) it may be out of the adjustment range. If you don't, at least send it in to sigma (you'll need to pay postage though)

Any place has this lens in stock? I'm dying to get one.
Hence the rewards of placing a pre-order
Once the word gets out, this is gonna be an even tougher find!
