p.1 #1 · "Like" option in image threads

What do you guys think if we ask Fred to add a Like option in image threads. Instead on commenting on the photos, we just click Like on the images we like. Perhaps a "Dislike" button too, but I imagine this would create some problems

Good idea. The MU-43 forum has the "thanks" button that I thought wouldn't be difficult to implement here

Not in favour, this site for me is about communication feedback both positive & negative and generally for the purpose of the combined development of our learning & the refining our photographic skills, finding help so we individually are able to raise the bar, and enjoy the journey.

Having the Like button doesn't mean you can't comment on a photo if you have something meaningful to say. But most of the time, we want to show someone that we like his photo, but we end up with the same cliche comments: brilliant, superb, beautiful... etc. This clutters image threads with comments while they are supposed to be an image showcase.

I don't think there will be less responses just because there's a like button - too many vocal and opinionated people out there But seriously, there are lurkers out there, too, like me who seldom say anything useful if at all but would like to show that I liked/approve of a post/comment in a small way.

Yeah, I'm not on board, Edward. Multi-image posts would be a problem for me. It's rare when I really "like" every image in the post, and separating them out in a post full of links for separate "likes" would be, I'm thinking, more effort than is feasible. Also, if you like something well enough to "vote" why not express your appreciation more directly with comment?

I guess I'm not really against the idea. I just don't know that I'd use it.

Not a bad idea. I think those that have something to say will still post, so at least on the alt forum the danger of people becoming "lazy" and only pushing the button instead of posting would be pretty small. OTOH, I do not like all this FB-like, so maybe another naming would be of benefit.

Agreed. Let's not turn FM into facebook, please. I've seen websites with nice communities be destroyed because the people felt the need to leverage linkage to facebook, through which the sites lost their own unique character.
I like sites that are uncluttered, bare bones, but functional. I'm not against upvote/like buttons per se but I wouldn't really care for them on FM. I prefer to see some nice comments over seeing the number of "likes". Displaying a number or likes introduces an element of comparison or competition, because you can see at a glance how many people have liked which pictures, which is undesirable to me.

If you're too lazy to type "Nice" or "I like it" and click "Send Reply" vs. clicking a "Like" button, enjoy your coma...

A simple will do too.

It is a hard issue to be unequivocal about. On one hand many people do not post images if no one shows interest, so if there is no sense of feedback they stop doing so, as I have. It is a world of image overload and you get the impression viewers flip absent mindedly from one to the next with little pause or reflection. Attention spans, and viewing time are short. Why bother in these circumstances?

On the other hand, comments are very valuable. But as one who enjoys providing/receiving feedback I often feel I am interrupting the flow of image threads with 'words'. So I stopped that too. I think these issues are the reasons so few post a set of images from travel, themes etc.

I do believe this idea would work best for the image threads, where an anonymous affirmation might increase a photographer's interest or morale in a discreet way. If a lot of us feel like AhamB, perhaps the poster only gets to see the feedback. Another idea is to encourage image text feedback, intended only for the poster.

To get some scaling into the process might get around the rather blunt instrument of 'Like/Dislike', say a 1-10 (or 1-11 for Spinal Tap fans). I also feel that a limit on the number of images is a good idea for image threads, say a maximum of 5, to prevent 'swamping'.

If you just want to flip between images, there are many sources...
http://500px.com/market/bestsellers & http://500px.com/popular
or
http://www.flickriver.com/
to name a few.

I would rather see a "Hide comments" view, then only posts with images are displayed.

I didn't expect this thread to receive such opinionated comments. It's just a discreet button somewhere in the bottom of the post. If you don't like it don't use it. If you want to comment with words, please feel free to do so, no one is stopping you.

There's a "Like" system over at GetDPI which was just implemented a few months ago. Like Mr. Lightshow, I thought it was gonna be gay and inspire laziness. But I actually found it to be rather cool! Instead of inspiring laziness it actually added another dimension to forum browsing there. We can now "image flip" and also post normally like always.

If anything it may have inspired more text commenting... as people sometimes feel they need to explain why the "Liked" something.

So I'm not against the idea. It's not really important to me one way or the other.

What I would really like to see here is longer thread displays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My gawd 20 posts to a page? ? ? ? ? ? That TOTALLY SUCKS NUGGETS!... and a half! So if I were to invest my time in getting a feature implemented here it would be that. Even my phone likes 100 messages with 80 to 150 images per page... so the idea that this might be for mobile people is kinda lame IMO! At least add a user option so I can define the number 10 to 100. This matters MUCH more to me than having a "Like" feature or not!

...just saying.

That's not how it works, the idea is to force your idea of how things should be on everyone else too

I am mildly pro, but a good argument against (which I haven't seen yet) might sway me.

I don't think a like system will stop you from still doing what you do today, it would be in addition to.

I think that a system like that of GetDPI clutters threads much more than the occasional complimenting comment in image threads and so far added features like these on FM can never be hidden/disabled through a profile setting. Seeing which people and how many others liked a picture doesn't interest me at all and is visual noise to me. Anyway, that's JMO.

There is a "rate" at the top. Don't know if it does anything because I don't think anyone knows it's there.

Yeah, we all know about the thread rating here I think. Even if it's not often employed.

Aham,
Yeah... that is a tad bit annoying. User switchable features are really the way to go IMO too!
On the personal interest thing I guess it's not really a feature most in the Alt section would wanna make a lot of use of. But I'm not so sure about those who frequent the themed image sub-forums here. I think a lot of folks post in there just for the very reason of seeing how many others liked it or how well it appeals to gen-pop tastes across the board.

Either way... <shrug> I'm still completely neutral on the idea.

I dont know. Sure like/dislike Im ok with that, but problem is usually in human nature..

Tho I would be up for some gallery with just pics and ability to write comments to them (and either like or dislike). I know that theres 500px (Im there too), but I would simply like to see something vaguely similar here on FM forums, especially in that little ALT corner.

That gallery is meant like regular thread, just with exception that you can add some comments/likes/dislikes directly to pic (and perhaps pack/unpack those comments as you wish).
