The ipad is a great toy but I bought an ipad3 and returned it. A large percentage of sites I visit (including whcc) utilize flash and i find itunes to be a frustrating interface to use when all you want to do is copy images to the device. Is there an ipad gallery viewer that saves cropping information I can import into lightroom? And is there something out there which allows you to flag images and then do comparisons between flagged images ? This is something I do constantly when presenting images to customers. Now you wonder why you get so many snide remarks when you start out with "The iPad is a great toy".

Geee, I wonder why?

Why not? Get a MBA and you'll have everything you need. Is something missing here?

The part your missing is that he came here not to ask questions but to get validation and a pat in the back on what a great idea he had. Any discussion that doesn't reinforce that is going to be met with hostility.

Yeh, I am anticipating the famous blue screen of death to be kept around. MS has not disappointed in this area over the years.

Of course this is a total mischaracterization of what iPads can do. Their functionality is not limited at web viewing or 'playing little apps'. There are versions of Photoshop, iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, etc for the iPad, tailored for use on a device of its size and capabilities.

What's not innovative is to simply throw your desktop operating system on a tablet with a touchscreen and just expect everything to work hunky dory.

Are you saying Windows Tablet edition was a big fail and nobody really figured out the mass market tablet experience until the iPad?

I think MS is taking a better approach this round and they're actually innovating with Metro and tiles. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Metro may be fine, but it's starting from a big app disadvantage. However, the enthusiasm in this thread seems to be for running regular Windows apps on a tablet. I think that approach is a nonstarter, just get a small laptop.

why not? because the tablet is small? because the hardware is slow? i'm sure there will be alot of things need to redo on this new MS tablet, but it is a pioneer. A leader of change and bring huge potentials for its followers.
Were you the same one who think: why is there a laptop when there is desktop?? a cell phone when there is home phone

I have an iPad, but if Win Table can use big USB HDD (hopefully it can support exFAT) then I would be interested to get one for travel use. No need to carry a notebook just for transfer files from CF/SD card to HDDs (I do have a MBA but I won't something even lighter when doing overseas travel and I might not have spare time/energy to develop raw files after I go back to hotel).

Actually I am a bit optimistic about Win 8 RT Tablet. Bundle with MS office (fully compatible with desktop version, they say) alone would be very useful for students, and those who need to use PowerPoint on the go.

Too bad iPad seems the have the best display but the most limited functionality.

Because MS has tried it for years and it never worked? Because weighing down a portable, touchscreen device with legacy user interfaces and workflows is a usability nightmare? I have no doubt that a few geeks will love it, but I don't think there's anything particularly new or interesting in it.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

Would you mind to explain: Because MS has tried it for years and it never worked?........ What is "it' that you're refering to/

MS pushed tablets running a desktop operating system for years. It's not really anything new.

The point I'm making is fairly simple. If you want to run desktop apps with keyboard/mouse input and external peripherals, why not get a laptop? What advantages does a tablet really offer in that situation? Once you're carrying a bunch of peripherals, is the nominal weight savings even relevant? What else are you gaining to make up for the performance and integration you give up versus a laptop?

Really? Can you please explain me how to transfer a file to my iPad? I'm not the most stupid person
in the world and I still can't figure this out... Photoshop? Great, so do I have to open iTunes
just to copy my PS file from the iPad to my Mac? Is it really that innovative?
Every app stores files randomly in a completely random place and there is no (simple) way
to organize those files? Is that how you make your life easier?
Apple used to be the most innovative and creative company in the world.
Now it's the most greedy and a complete opposite of creative. I wish I could easily transfer
all my mac software to PC versions...
Seriously, I would have NEVER expected myself to say something like that...

I'm not sure I'd characterize them as greedy, but I agree with the overall sentiment, specific to the iPad. They're not doing themselves any favors by continuing to treat the iPad like a giant iPod Touch. But as long as consumers are willing to skip their mortgage payments or raise their consumer debt to purchase the latest and greatest, they've got no reason to change.

How did this end up in the alt forum, anyway? It seems like it would be a better topic for Post Processing.

Of course it's greed. There is only one reason they keep this environment so closed.
So they can control all the apps and charge 30% of each app sale.
They don't give the sh#t about consumers and their "experience".
Please check out their numbers. They make more money on apps than on all the Macs.
And they pay 3% taxes...

Not having read the entire thread this may be redundant however with regard to Win 8 (on desktops/laptops) the well respected magazine PcPro has published continual surveys of its development. The following link is to an abridged version of the review published last month.
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/software/376540/windows-8-for-desktops-and-laptops
To put it mildly it's an underwhelming choice for these devices. As for the tablets, who knows until they become available. One quote:
"Windows 8 will join Vista on the Mary Celeste of forgotten operating systems"
