p.2 #1 · I think i'm going to buy a windows 8 tablet

again, i'm not interested in editing. All I want to do is interactively allow my clients to pick the prints they want. This sometimes involves minor tweaks such as cropping or adjusting exposure. I don't use the notebook for real editing but I do download the cropping adjustments to my desktop when I'm back in the office. Actually doing the editing on the tablet doesn't really help me much since it's not the raw files that are on the tablet/notebook...

If you want a laptop, get a laptop, if you want a pad, get a pad. Simple.

Brilliant. Too bad life is not black & white like that.

Isn't Windows 8 supposed to be tablet-like featuring touch screen function?

I put up with touch screen on my iphone and hate it. Keep ultrabook solely for

photography; netbook for internet. How are these tablets like ipad

better than a light laptop?

I am a retired chemistry teacher and amateur photographer so I

don't make presentations to anyone except guests when we

use the large screen HD 1080 TV as a digital picture frame.

Wait you allow your clients to crop your photos or do it live in front of them?

i do it in front of them. For example, I had a 3/4 length shot recently and the client liked the expression better than the head and shoulders shots I had taken so interactively I cropped it in LR until they were happy and that's the portrait they ordered. This particular client was extremely picky and it was a bonus that I could take import that image into my full LR database at the office and apply the exact crop to the raw file rather than attempt to recreate it.

Personally, I'm waiting for the 13" Macbook Pro Retina. I have a work 15" MBP and it's good enough but I really want a retina display. The IQ on those things are Stunning.

Also giving the 13" the option of the matte screen, like the 15" has, might convince me to upgrade sooner.

Should I conclude that you don't know what editing is?

p.2 #11 · I think i'm going to buy a windows 8 tablet

I recently attended a briefing session on upcoming MS products...

Not sure you are having the correct expectation on Win8 Tablet... There will be 2 kinds of Windows 8 tablet. One is "wintel" , x86 based and the other is ARM CPU based (like iPad and Android tablets).

Wintel based tablet are like MacBook Air(or ultra book) without keyboard, actually a full fledged computer. So installing LR, PS would not be a probblem. I wad told it WILL be larger than ARM based tablets and will be more expensive.

The other one, ARM based tablet, the Windows is actually Windows RT. They told us it is NOT going to run things like Photoshop but apps that specifically designed for Windows 8. Those app are mostly HTML5 based, can run on phone, tablet and win8 based PC. My impression is that the biggest selling point for WinRT is the bundled MS office. You cannot run PC version of photoshop/ Lightroom on WinRT unless Adobe create one ( iPad only got PS express and is nothing like the desktop version). The newly developed "app" part is essentially the only common things between different Windows8 on different platforms. I wouldnt expect much on those apps(maybe something like snapsed at best)

Both kind of tablet will have USB support, so if your purpose is transferring files without limitations of iTunes then the WinRT should works for you. If you want to run LR you have to get the bigger, heavier, more expensive Windows 8 ( not ARM based WinRT ) tablet.

Yes I am. I'm talking about the x86 version, not RT. You obviously couldn't run the Adobe products on the RT version of windows 8. The limiting factor is that most of the x86 windows 8 tablets i've seen spec'd have 2gb of memory which probably wouldn't be enough to efficiently run LR.

Where did that comment come from? You keep saying that you don't want to edit, and then go on to list a few editing commands. There are actually programs which do not allow editing. Anyway, welcome to a well-deserved spot on my hide list.

Doesn't iPhoto support cropping and adjusting exposure on the iPad? Really, you don't have to look far. Photoshop? There are tons of apps available that do that sort of thing. You also don't have to use iTunes to transfer files, there are a lot of other solutions, like Dropbox. The camera connection kit adds a USB port and there's another adapter for HDMI.

I don't understand why anyone would want to run desktop software on a tablet with a touchscreen. You end up having to lug around a mouse and keyboard and probably a much beefier tablet just so the software will run with decent performance. At that point, why not just get a laptop? The Windows 8 strategy makes very little sense to me.

I am interested in the new Windows 8 Pro tablet for this same reason. All Microsoft Surface Windows 8 tablets have support for two keyboards. Both you can attach and detach like the plastic cover on iPad, and one is about the same thickness and flexibility as the iPad cover. The tablets have Bluetooth and USB for mouse support. The Pro is said to support up to 128 GB of memory/storage.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for an intelligent response without posturing, chest-beating or pwning. The issue with the windows 8 pro tablets may be in system memory. I'm thinking you will need at least 4gb of memory to do justice to LR. So far the 3rd party windows 8 tablets are being sold with a max of 2gb of memory.

Yes the Windows 8 Pro looks like it may be a good solution for storing, editing, and posting images while on the road. I'm sure it won't be a powerhouse in any one regard, but I hope it will be at least adequate.

Connectivity to the camera and external data drives will be key for me.

Really it's compactness over a dedicated laptop that it's trying to provide.

agreed and since it supports usb client and host mode, it should be capable of being a powerful tool including the ability to run the canon capture utility.
