p.2 #1 · Sold: Nikon D4 with 400mm 2.8 AF-S II $12,000
I can't vouch for anything represented in the listing but I can tell you that when I used to shoot with Nikon I sold a couple of lenses to Kyle (before I joined this site) and have met him in person on two different occasions. We had a chance to chat for a while each time and he always struck me as an honest, straight forward person. I would feel comfortable buying from him. He does shoot a lot of sporting events and it is high school football season right now so I can understand his desire not to want to be without equipment.
@ Kyle, I agree that you might want to rent while your gear is in the shop. It will cost you money but I think that you'll make it back by getting more from selling the lens and body when they are separated. Good luck!

Maybe I missed something, but how does that even happen?
It can happen. A friend had a lens stuck before. Sent it to Nikon and it ended up being a screw on the lens mount backed out a little this made it bind up.

Too bad they are mated, I'm looking for a AF-S II or newer 400 2.8. Good luck getting it sorted out, I can only imagine the frustration and the bind that you're in.

Not to be too much of a d1ck, but if you could afford a D4, and a 400mm, you can afford to rent replacements, or you're theoretically qualified to join NPS, or perhaps go back to where you got them from and demand an exchange.
Not to mention anyone who could afford all this hardware, would theoretically be smart enough to get a second back up and maybe a third.
Sucks it broke, but I dont think this is a valid solution, trying to unload broken gear to someone at a full retail price. Maybe if you knocked MANY Franklins off that price.

The cost of shipping that combo to Nikon for repair would be huge. Have you looked into camera repair shops in Toledo where you could drive there and maybe they could fix it while you wait? I just can't see someone willing to buy this without having some idea what the problem is and what it would cost to repair.
It looks like you have several choices within a 4 or 5 hour drive from Carey, OH. You might want to try calling hem for advice, before you take a long drive.

Kyle: Seriously in the time it takes to sell this combo you could have it back from Nikon. One day out courier about 48/72 hours in the shop and one day back. I would think a new lens mount would be needed as I had this happen years ago with a D2X and 300 and for around $300 (plus courier costs) and less than a week I had everything working again.

I have personally met Kyle on different occasions and have sold him items as well. Kyle is a stand up guy who is busting his A$$ to make a living here shooting sports. Trying to afford the best equipment for the job sometimes means flying without a safety net (second body pro body / lens combo) while you make enough money to justify the cost. While some of us do this for hobby and others as a second business, Not every one can put that money out front while trying to turn a profit.
Most of the posts here are offering good solid advice and Kyle should take this in to a repair shop and have it fixed then decide on the sale.

I just sent an AF II 300mm f/2.8 in to NPS on August 8th and I got it back last Friday!!!!! I'm really liking Nikon after 19 years with Canon but that experience does not sit well with me... pm-r
Give them a call and see what they say. They might be able to do it on spot for ya.
Yeah, they gave me "Repair on this model is $31.00 + return shipping, includes clean, lube and adjust. See repair form attached." May 16th 2011 for an issue I had with the 400, I took the day off and drove up for the repair, when I got there they told me it would be ~$600 I am going to have a hard time going back to them.

You have to remember what you describe and what is actually wrong can be totally different. Most of the time you dont know what is wrong till you open it up. Thats why they are estimates.

The D4 must still be under warranty.
I would call Nikon directly and ask them to make a special effort to fix this for you. I'm sure they don't like seeing an international discussion on how their flagship $6K body got stuck on a lens !
