p.9 #12 · Sony RX1 FF Mirrorless (Original 2012 thread) | |
Don't get me wrong, this, and basically all the CSC's to date have been a great step in the right direction.
Its amazing to think of what type of size/weight and expense in gear I used to lug all over with me to get results that many times are aren't close to what sub $1k cameras like the NEX5n, OM-D can all achieve.
Carrying a 3lb shoulder bag sure beats a 20lb backpack by a HUGE margin!
But, for me at least, its still not quite where I want to be. X100 probably has come the closest in given me a pretty near pocketable travel camera that can deliver some great images and usually wasn't bad to walk around with all day. RX100 is also a near home run but still staying inside the fence as well.
Basically for me though is that I want a "real" camera when I want to play photographer, and when I don't, I want to hardly know I'm carrying it.
I want something that I can slip into a pocket and not know its there. I don't want to carry a shoulder bag, or fanny pack, or wear it around my neck all day. I don't want everyone on the subway ride at night to see my camera around my neck. I don't want to leave a shoulder bag with $3k of gear sitting on the booth in a restaurant. I just want to slip my camera into my pocket and go.
Plenty of pocketable solutions these days of course. My little Canon HS300, which I gave away, was so small it fit into shirt pockets on even a polo. Darn thing was small! Of course it also took photos like a small compact and frankly my iPhone, save for the flash, worked about as well.
What I want, and I know its a bit unrealistic, is getting at least APS-C, if not FF IQ in something that fits into my pocket, ideally with a zoom lens covering 24-60mm. I'd easily pay $3k if not $4k for that.
If its a smaller than DSLR camera, with a great lens, and FF sensor, that just doesn't really do it for me. I've already owned a M9.
It was a great smaller than DSLR FF camera and with my Zeiss Biogon 35mm I had a great 35mm FoV as well. Heck it even had an amazing OVF!
Other than the pricetag it was nearly everything people seem to want on their list of dream cameras right ?
FF ? check
Smaller than DSLR ? check
OVF ? check
Works great with M mount glass, even wides ? Check and Check
Great IQ ? Check
Heck, even those that want no AA sensor ? Check again
Price keeps many away, with good reason, but honestly, even if a M9 was a $2500 camera, it still wouldn't really do it for me.
It would have the exact same issues that the X100, NEX5n, OM-D et al did. Doesn't fit into my pocket,
When Im willing to carry a camera, it works great as do the other options. Problem is though that the times don't want to carry a camera far outweigh the times when I want to grab a camera and head out to shoot.
I need a tool that is always with me so when I'm out at lunch, or commuting, or have downtime between meetings, or on a quick one day trip etc and I see an oppurtunity to shoot, I've got the camera with me.
I'm sure we are all sick of hearing the old "best camera is the one you have with you" line, but it really is true.
RX100 to date has probably been my best not professional gear purchase, just because its able to come with me.
Its fine and good, great in fact for its size, but being a typical earthbound human, and American at that, I want more.
A 1inch CX sensor is great, but darn if I wouldn't prefer APS-C right ?
And you know what ? If I get APS-C I'm going to still in the back of my mind want FF lol
I guess in the end its all well and good though, because just imagine what would happen if we all were really happy with our gear ?
Who would buy new cameras ?
Why would anyone develop new products ?
Mine, and a million other GAS having photographers on internet forums everywhere never stopping unrealistic demands is the very reason we even have things like the RX1, the RX100, the X100 and more

I guess my problem is that I don't have ANY pocket room, even for a P&S sized camera. In fact, I've never actually even owned a P&S camera. I've got a cell phone, keys, chapstick, etc. already tying up all of my usable pocket room. So, until my cellphone is delivering aps-c (or maybe RX100) quality, I'm going to need to have some kind of camera to carry along with me in some fashion.
Once I quite shooting paid gigs, I got tired of lugging around the A900 and a single prime everywhere, which is what started me on the mirrorless journey in the first place, and A900 or better IQ in such a small package is pretty interesting. Even though NEX, X100, etc. don't fit in my pocket, carrying them is far better than the A900 day to day.
