Here's what I've found over the past year and half having a Canon 5d MarkII/MarkIII and the sony nex5. The sony nex5 sits in a drawer and hasn't been used for over 8 months. The reasons I haven't used the nex5 for so long are 1. the 16mm pancake lens was not an ideal general purpose focal length and the zoom lens was too big and not fast enough for what I wanted. 2. I kept waiting for better lenses or an adapter that would fit my canon lenses and allow for autofocus etc...3. third party adapters would not allow for autofocus so it did not fit my style and type of photography.
I'm sure the fuji is a great camera but I didn't feel like investing in another MLC. Also, it doesn't have interchangeable lenses and I knew it was only a matter of time before Canon came out with their own version.
Although this camera meets most of my needs, i'll probably wait a little longer to see what else they come out with Hopefully a MLC with more buttons and dials for faster settings changes. An EVF is not a deal breaker for me with this type of camera.

I've read about Olympus troubles...but they and others are pushing the mirrorless camera transition and are dragging Canon and Nikon screaming along with them. Mirrorless cameras are outselling DSLR's in Japan. Why do you think Canon has jumped into the game? I am sure Canon would love to have it like the old days where they dominated the DSLR camera market, but Oly and others have been changing the markets to the chagrin of Canon.

Guess you are enjoying another session of Canon bashing. Mind you, I find AF on the EOS M too slow and its base ISO dynamic range too limited, so I have no intention of getting a Canon mirrorless camera myself. Even then, I find it increasingly painful to read your endless tirade against anything Canon.
FYI. Despite their intense efforts to unseat Nikon and Canon in the camera arena, Sony has really not made much headway. Just look at the latest sales results in their home ground, Japan:
DSLR category (Sony SLT is included here by BCNRanking):
1. Canon @ 59.8%
2. Nikon @ 28.8%
Compact camera category:
1. Canon @ 16.2%
2. Sony @ 15.4%
Sorry, Sony may be pushing technological boundaries, but it's not helping them very much where it really matters: the bottom-line. ...Show more →
Personally I don't care about any Camera manufacturer's bottom line. I don't own any of their stock...so who cares. What I do care about is advances in new technology and Canon has been stagnant in that arena for the last few years while a lot of the smaller players have been pushing the technologies. That I am grateful for as without these ankle biters nipping at the big two, we would see very slow technology progress and milking of existing technologies as long as possible so they could beef up their corporate bottom lines. Screw the big corps and hats off to the technology trail blazers.
Funny, I've read about Olympus 's troubles, and they still able to give other like Canon/Nikon some "trouble" too imagine if they're a well run machine...I missed the OM-1/2 and the FM-1/2 bodies...

Do you have any link to prove mirrorless cameras are outselling DSLRs in Japan? BCNRanking separates the categories, so I do not know the source of your info.
Why Canon jumps onto the MILC bandwagon? Because Canon knew about MILCs as early as 2006 (probably much earlier), as revealed in this PC Photo interview. And that was before Panasonic released the world's first MILC camera (DMC-G1) in 2008.

So when you dislike Canon that much. And you really have to dislike them after writing about 2000 posts complaining about every product they make. Why do you still post in the Canon forum? Why not post in the forums where they write about Sony, Oly, Fuji, Pany and the others that you think are great? There is a lot of threads in the Alt forum about all those brands and cameras. You never post anything there!! why? Is it so much more fun to do your Canon bashing?

Oh man - my OM-2 was stolen and I still miss that thing - an awesome camera indeed.

Lars, I shoot Canon equipment...that is why I post here. As far as Canon bashing, I don't...but I do call them as I see them, and this EOS-M falls short compared to it's competition. No viewfinder is a real deal breaker for me, and many others. If that is what you call bashing, then that is your problem, not mine. That is just a fact, and it limits the usefulness of the camera. Having to compose through the LCD on a sunny day is almost impossible.
As far as Sony, Oly etc... Leading the mirrorless pack, do you disagree with that statement? In fact, what do you actually take offense in my post. I don't understand you.

I just picked up a OM-5 and from the short time I have used it. I can say, that I would really miss the view finder like the one in my OM-D . As some have mentioned focusing and composing in bright light with the back LCD is almost impossible.
I was also hoping for Canon to come out with there version of the the Lecia M9 with full frame with 9 FPS like my OM-D.
Being able to use glass like Voightlander 35 1.2 ASAP is fantastic. I just wish it wasnt cropped.

Really?
So, if Canon releases an EVF for the EOS-M, are you going to retract all your bashing? I doubt so. You will probably find other shortcomings to whine about.
If Sony, Fujifilm, Oly... are such strong market leaders, why don't you just dump Canon? Can you even find a single flaw in the Sony, Oly... setup? Or do you prefer to continue bashing Canon?

Actually, if Canon comes out with an advanced EOS-M with a viewfinder and some more controls, then I would be very interested in the camera. As it sits today, not so much. A viewfinder is a must for me.
As far as choosing other manufactures other than Canon...I did just that and got myself an X100 which I thoroughly love. Great image quality, excellent viewfinder options and the latest firmware release fixed the AF issues.
I am not bashing Canon...just stating the truth. If you don't like to hear the truth, just ignore me and drink the Canon purple koolaid.

You had a rational post going until you stated the 'truth'. Might have been best to use 'my opinion' In this case.
Did you buy the x100 before or after the AF was fixed...can't imagine you would buy a buggy product just because of the hype

I actually bought it before the AF was fixed to use as a landscape camera when hiking. Did not need the fast AF in this situation. Since that time, I find the X100 as a great street and event camera as well as a camera I take with me on bike rides, business trips etc... With the latest firmware, the AF never lets me down. Overall, the X100 is an excellent camera.
One thing that I am looking for from Canon is their mirrorless with a workable viewfinder. I will not purchase a camera that requires me to compose through the LCD. I was out today in bright Alberta sunshine with my X100 and there is no way I could have used the LCD to compose images due to the glare from the bright day. I don't believe using Canon's LCD's would make any difference. I do like the large sensor and interchangeable lenses...but it needs to grow a viewfinder to be taken seriously.

!!! Sometimes you are an a-hole (absolutely no disrespect, you know how are you with your sarcasm) and other times, like this, you are absolutely HILARIOUS!! That made my morning.
I have a 5D and some L Glass. I have a website. I have a blog. I am not pro and probably never will be. All of that said, I think its gonna be a good camera to take everywhere and a camera I will DEF use on vacation. I fooled myself into thinking I would use all the gear I just got back from vacation with. It was too heavy and I was too worried about it being damaged or stolen. My instax210 was used the entire time as a result. I think everyone is reading into it way too much, especially since no one yet knows how it will perform upon release.
Regardless of how well it does I am buying one because its small and simple for stupid people like me
I am buying one. I have a 5D with 35L, 135L and 17-40L but cannot carry it always with me.
The size of the Canon M with the 22mm f2 is perfect for a small camera with great DOF control. I think there is no other camera/lens combination with better DOF control at a same or lower size (with autofocus). As a bonus, the MTF curves of the 22mm are very good. At the end, sensor size and lenses are the key elements, and Canon has these covered. The closest competition is the panasonic 20mm f1.7, but since I have more Canon lenses and a Canon small flash, I decided to go with the Canon M.
I only hope autofocus is not so slow in real usage.
