'cause I want the smallest possible unit (I already have a 430).
I don't think this flash is going to be that much smaller than the 270EX, which you can tilt up to bounce the light off the ceiling.
Anyway, I'm not impressed with the lack of pop up flash. I just goes against the idea of a compact kit. Not to mention if they have an electronic EVF that mounts on the hotshoe. Having two gadgets that you can't use together is not good planning. Why they would choose to place the audio recorder at the top instead of a pop up flash is also beyond me.
Heck, even a smartphone style LED flash is preferable than no flash at all.
That LCD better be a touchscreen as well. If not... Well, I just don't see this camera doing well in the casual market, especially with the lack of pop up flash and tilting screen. Unless it's much cheaper than the competition, which I doubt.
Being a latecomer to the market, Canon really should go all out with their debut model to impress and attract the consumers away from the competitions. I don't think they have done that with this camera.

I think most likely the LCD is going to be a touchscreen. I would assume it's implementation is going to be similar to the one on the 650D/4Ti (though I liked how that one had an articulating touchscreen).

I will wait for EOS-M Mark IV version...
Seriously, this seems like Canon just drop a "marketing bomb" here to make those who're waiting for the next Sony NEX-x, OMD E5, GF-x, etc... to hold their wallet and wait for a bit longer, to see what Canon will have for them. Very clever!

That's not what Canon has done historically...Canon has (almost) always introduced new tech with consumer or lower-end models, then after a while (if the sales figures hold up), the new tech will eventually reach a 'pro' level. When the EOS system was introduced in May of '87, it wasn't until late '89 that the first 1-series body was introduced. The 1st pellicle mirror RT EOS body was introduced in '89 but didn't find it's way to a 1-series until '95. Image Stabilization came more than a year to a consumer lens before being put in an 'L' lens. If you discount the very early (and extremely expensive) DSLR's that were produced in conjunction with Kodak, the first widely afforadble DSLR was the D30...more than a year before the 1D. There have been few exceptions to this marketing plan...the (much derided) first DO lens was introduced as a high-end 400mm version and has since only seen one other variant in a prosumer lens. Another exception would be the introduction of the EOS IX (the film version of APS-C crop format)...it was originally introduced as a high-end prosumer model that was later followed by a lower end consumer version...it was a sales disaster and the two cameras discontinued in short order.
So, if you look at that history, this is the first 'consumer' mirror-less model and only trime will tell if there will be a 'pro' version.

Why wait when there are fabulous mirror less cameras already out there. The Camera does not have to say Canon on it be good. I got myself an X100 and could not be happier. The images this small portable camera produces are simply stunning. I've read about the Sony and Oly cameras and both apoear to also produce unbelievable images. No sense in waiting as there is gear out there today that will blow your socks off. Gravitate a little from Canon and you'll be amazed at what the rest of the manufactures have been up to.

What do you see here that is not available from Fuji, Sony or Olympus...other than the Canon name?
Based on the pictures... not much. That said, the ALT board has a heck of a lot of good images produced using those names you just posted.
I just sold my EP-2 and 20mm 1.7, so its not like I've not also bought into other such systems. The autofocus speed was slow and cost me too many candid shots. That defeated the purpose of having a small camera where I might not carry my DSLR.
Just comparing to the E-P2 (not the state of the art body, I realize), Decent auto-focus and potential compatibility with another prime or two (via adapter) wouldn't be bad to have. The larger sensor would be greatly welcomed as well... I used the olympus/panasonic combo without flash 95% of the time so I would expect improved ISO performance from this.
I just appreciate another option and will be giving it a chance. I'm not asking for the world like many others on this thread

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I wasn't talking about Canon bringing the pro version, I was actually saying that this camera is missing some features even for the casual shooter/consumer market.

What exactly is clever? No lines in stores, no pre-orders online, nobody asking on forums for new options etc. Instead you are walking into Target, Wal-Mart, Costco or Sam’s club or any other possible store selling discounted electronics and whoala -> any brand/model of such cameras are piled to the roofs and available any time. Just don't forget to clean dust from the boxes In 6 month after release nobody will even remember model number!!! It is Canon marketing fiasco in my vision, they should better read what people are asking them for years to do in lenses and slr bodies.

Same with the Nikon V1 that I tried. Not bad IQ and pretty good AF if your subject was sitting still. Otherwise, everything is too small and slow to compete with the cheapest DSLR. IMO
