Continuing the floral attitude...
This afternoon in the zinnia bed with a (rented) 200 f/2L with a 36mm extension tube...,

This is the second time I've rented this lens with the intention of showing myself that I need neither the 200 f/2L nor the 200 f/1.8L...so far its not working very well.

The only inside sports I shoot is swimming, and I find a 70-200 2.8 zoom to be really handy there; for sufficient depth of field, versatility in framing, and high enough shutter speeds. My children have stopped acting in plays, so theater has dropped off my list...And none of my daughters enjoys (or even tolerates) posing for portraits....
Still, I seem to find subjects worthy of the f/2 aperture (the butterfly needed more DOF than that)...and it's really fun to use...oh well, maybe this will put it off for a few more months again...

Jerry

@ snapsy, a really nice capture of the flag, emotions, lump-in-throat for me, my father served for 37yrs; Army, Navy and Civil Services. Lost him a few yrs back...thanks for your post!

@T.Jer, butterflies n flowers are wonderful, the colors you captured are ... wow, really like!

@ Desutoroido, what a beautiful shot, colors, composition, sharpness
Your image reminds me of some of my uncle Mike's oil painting of the New Mexico deserts/mountains, brought back some great memories. Thanks for posting!

@ Everyone else, great summer shots, you all inspire

Jerry

Here is some long range shots with 1DX + 800L, monopod mounted.
Nothing flying around today which I could shoot, thus I just couldn't continue testing the camera on BIF which is a bit of a hindrance because that's primarily what I got the camera for.

OK, let us drink some beer, Psych. Salute...

(1) Here is a fat tire man with 1DX + 300 f/2.8 IS MkI.

(2) This is a portrayal of a summer floral art: old school Chinese cloisonne.
Handheld 1DX + 800L, f/5.6, 1/50 sec.

(3) A little friend departs thru a layer of algae in a conservation pond.
Monopod mounted 1DX + 800L.

(4) This hunched over dwarf was very well hidden deep inside a tree crown. Infrequently, it would shift its weight around and move a bit. Not only it was difficult getting an unobstructed view of the bird, one would also have to wait for a sunbeam to hit its head and eyes.
A monopod is less than ideal support for that kind of a waiting game.....a tripod is the way to go.

Monopod mounted 1DX + 800L.

Peter, if i didn't have some serious gear envy before........ haha, hoping to shoot with the same combo before the end of next year, after i grab the 500mkII later this year =P how are you liking the 1DX JPG engine now that you've had a chance to work out some of the kinks?

Kevin, the quality of BIF shots still remains an issue that will probably linger for a while, because the test targets are in real short supply these days.
The rest of the camera functions/features seem good enough.

Yes, I think 500 II is the way to go, if you are going to have one long lens only, and your comfort is also important to you.
As far as 1DX is concerned, I have some serious doubts about its cost effectiveness at the present price, more so now than ever.

Since there are no BIF you can just send the camera to me and I'll test it for landscapes. Love the last bird shot sailing away in the green waters.

beautiful shot Eddy! you're doing wonders with the 17-40L & you deserve my neglected Zeiss 21mm more than I do for sure!

thanks for that feedback Peter - definitely looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts/BIF images from the 1DX..

I'll be honest, the early rave reviews of the 1DX's focus acquisition + metering abilities had me going for a bit last week.. then i weighed the option of having to sell my beloved 1DsIII for a ridiculously low price & realized that for a lot of the applications I'd want to use the 1DX for, I'd still prefer the longer reach of the 1DmkIV (seeing as I don't have a 400 2.8 or a 800 5.6 yet).. so for now, i'll stick with the 1DsmkIII/1DmkIV combo + continue saving for the 500mkII as planned.

& in the rare event I'll need a full-frame camera that focuses a bit better + operates faster than my 1DsmkIII, i still have the (hated) 5DmkIII to lean on..
