You know...I'd actually buy the pancake if it was USM.

The Verge has the T4i, 18-135 STM, and the 40mm STM review units and they are reporting that the autofocus is completely silent and "insanely fast":

STM stands for Stepping Motor, and mean that the lenses focus quickly, smoothly, and silently. The pitch is no joke, either: even as we held the lenses to our ears, there's no sound coming out whatsoever. The lenses use both phase-detect and contrast-detect autofocus simultaneously to make focusing insanely fast on the T4i, and the combination allows for a Canon first: continuous autofocus during video recording.

I'm not sure what stm af is. I h e experience with usm and non usm lenses. It's my experience usm is fast. I need fast focusing.

Perhaps the proper comment shouldve been, I'd get one of it was a fast af lens.

Given the 50's size, weight, and price, the 40/2.8 makes for a difficult sell.

Except for the attrocious build quality of the 50/1.8! Despite the fact that the 50/1.8 II is generally well received for it's IQ, it is (IMO) not all that great. I will concede that it's very good for the money but "good for the money" doesn't mean it's actually that good. After 3 or 4 different copies over the past 16 years, I continue to have the same opinion of that lens...inconsistent focus, not incredibly sharp wide open, and incredibly flimsy build quality.

A full frame 'pancake' that is really sharp wide open (even if it's only 2.8) and sharp

VERY tempting for me too...I just wish there was an MTF chart available and if it's rectilinear correct with a really flat plane of focus.

^^^^Thankyou!

Seems like it should be a little better than the other non-L 50mm & 35mm. Maybe not quite 'L' IQ but better than those other non-L's and cheaper too! The new STM AF should be better than the micro-motor of the 35/2 & 50/1.8 (and perhaps better than the 'troublesome' 50/1.4 motor). Hmmm...very tempting...I think I'll pre-order one too!

I preordered

should be a good street lens by the look of it, and you can't beat the price

OBTW, maybe I missed it in the anouncement but is there a ship date yet or is it strictly pre-order and keep your fingers crossed?

I would be more excited about this lens had the aperture been an f/2.0, similar to that of Voigtlander Ultron 40mm. But I realize that a faster aperture would increase the size/bulk by quite a bit.

It looks like this lens was introduced for the video shooters. Doesn't STM allow you to autofocus when in video mode much more quietly?

Should be available late June.

Agreed. f/2.8 is not fast enough to justify owning the lens, although it looks pretty nifty for those less demanding.

Not necessarily for those that are "less demanding"...simply a niche lens for certain circumstances. Right now I have been using a 35/2 which has been good for me but it has it's limitations (build quality, AF speed/consistency, noisy) so I'll soon be getting a 35/1.4 to replace/upgrade the 35/2. However, that will leave me with an even larger lens that wouldn't be appropriate for every situtaion...I'd still want a compact (reasonably fast) lens for those 'other' situations. This new 40/2.8 might be a better fit for me (along side the 35/1.4) than the 35/2 will be...it'll offer (presumably) better IQ, faster/quieter/more accurate AF, it's even MORE compact and less expensive. For me, seems like a good combo...YMMV of course.

For me, in order to invest in most primes with the exception of macro and supertele, the lens must be faster than f/2.8, preferably faster than f/2. Given the fact that the pancake offers other features (namely compactness) I can write the lack of speed off...but only to a certain extent. That makes me pretty demanding, thus others (not all others) would actually purchase the lens would be less so. That was my point

For me, this is more a toy than an investment. I am often too demanding.

Sounds like it might be better to wait for some user experiences before you assume that STM af is slower than USM. This is obviously a new type of AF, not the same as a typical non-USM Canon lens.

So landscape shooters are less demanding? Because they don't really need fast lenses

Obviously I was speaking in terms of aperture...though I guess stating that wasn't enough?

Very few of my primes are interesting to me because of fast aperture. It is maybe a Canon thing to associate primes with fast aperture mostly. I am more interested in performance at any aperture, or a special feature. In this case the special feature is the small size.

Besides, with a FF camera you still get pretty shallow DOF at f/2.8, and because high ISO performance is so good you can still shoot in low light with this thing. If the AF is good and IQ is better than 35/2 or either of the 50s, I would definitely consider it.

When shooting people, I'm often at f/2.8 or above anyhow - especially if they're moving.
