The 40 f/2.8 may actually be for the soon-to-be announced mirrorless camera. June is supposed to see announcements of 650D/T4i and mirrorless cameras. Pancake would make more sense for a CSC.

Indeed so, but I'd still like to see how it preforms against the 50/1.8. After all, both will need an adapter.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hmm. I wouldnt have thought about this but 40/2.8 on a 5d could be tempting for that size package...

If it can stay in that price range, they will sell a ton of those, I would love to have one. I don't want to divert the thread, but why were the 24 2.8 and 28 2.8 so expensive, if they can pull this off for around $200.00? Seems like the marketing has been weird lately.

the 24 and 28 are expensive because they are more complex, have a lot more elements, include IS and USM

Not convinced, sorry. The size and weight of lens and camera will not be significantly reduced than say, 35/2 or 50/1.8, which are faster.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

EF stands for "electro focus", so it's safe to assume it's an AF lens.
...

And EOS stands for "electro-optical system", but Canon also pointed out that Eos is the goddess of dawn, and Ef is her illegitimate daughter and goddess of shadow noise.

those 2mm will allow for the enough reach for printing true 300ppi 13x19"s from the 5D3 while being able to maintain a safe distance from certain types of wildlife such as the cast of the Jersey Shore and the f/3.2 will prevent accidentally hitting f/2.8 and having your retinas get blow out by sun glinting off of body oil.

Made the thread worthwhile reading!

If the thing actually happens, then I vote with those who are suggesting a new/different camera line. Canon is clearly leaving money on the table by not being in the mirror less segment and I think the "new rangefinder" is only going to grow. Maybe someone at Canon HQ got embarrassed by Nikon, Oly, even Fuji, pulled their head out, and are going to hit us with something really new and interesting that is actually affordable.

Um yeah, think I need another beer

Voigtlander make an f/2 pancake that looks similar size, but I guess it has no AF right, so maybe that's why it is so small?

I've been watching this one for a while. I've been wishing they would make a pancake for the last 10 years, and think Canon will sell every one they can make - and then some - as long as they don't price gouge.

This lens isn't for some shooters, but IMO this is the most exciting thing Canon has done (may do?) in over 5 years.

Could it be that they are actually paying attention to what is happening in the market (move toward smaller, lighter, more flexible kits)?

I have the super sharp Ultron for my Nikon. I can switch it to Canon with an EOS adaptor. It works well at F2.0 so it is faster than my zooms and replaces the 35mm and 50mm lenses for a Nikon and Canon on a trip.

I don't mind focusing a prime. It is very small so I can always have it with me. It's so well made that it's not especially light for a lens of its size. But lots lighter than a pro zoom. On a 1 series body it looks more like a naked 1.4x T/C than a lens it is so small. It comes with its own close up diopter. Really a joy to use.

Given the 50's size, weight, and price, the 40/2.8 makes for a difficult sell.

Except for the attrocious build quality of the 50/1.8! Despite the fact that the 50/1.8 II is generally well received for it's IQ, it is (IMO) not all that great. I will concede that it's very good for the money but "good for the money" doesn't mean it's actually that good. After 3 or 4 different copies over the past 16 years, I continue to have the same opinion of that lens...inconsistent focus, not incredibly sharp wide open, and incredibly flimsy build quality.

A full frame 'pancake' that is really sharp wide open (even if it's only 2.8) and sharp edge to edge that also has good/solid build quality and at a low enough price point would definitely be a 'Hot Seller' (IMHO). In fact, if the price point is closer to $200 (as some of the replies here have intimated) than I might be 1st in line to get one myself. In fact (well, maybe not a fact but conjecture)...it might be a cross-over lens for a new interchangable mirror-less camera!

Thanks to the miracle of eBay, I was able to find a better, faster version for my Nikon... and it has VR to boot!

The EF 40 2.8 looks like a cute one although I think I'll stick to my EF 35 2.0/5D2 when I want to go light. A 14 or 17 2.8 pancake would be ideal for a Rebel.

Interesting, but I wonder why they didn't make a 25mm pancake for APS-C? Such a lens seems tailor made for a small Rebel body.
