But the mount and every other piece is also larger, so you'd think they could just scale it, it's all just a matter of scale isn't it? I mean the Canon pancake can be twice the size of the Panasonic and still be considered a pancake.

Yeah, absolutely ridiculous lens. Now, if they made a 42mm f/3.2 for $285, that would be out of control awesome!!
+100
those 2mm will allow for the enough reach for printing true 300ppi 13x19"s from the 5D3 while being able to maintain a safe distance from certain types of wildlife such as the cast of the Jersey Shore and the f/3.2 will prevent accidentally hitting f/2.8 and having your retinas get blow out by sun glinting off of body oil.

Agreed. I tried the voigtlander 40 2.0 out but it was as heavy, if not heavier than my 35 2.0 and the canon was quite a bit less expensive.
The official weight of the Ultron 40 SL II is 200g, but the EF mount version really weighs 230g without caps and the tiny hood.
If the optical quality of a 40 mm f/2.8 comes out better than the Ultron 40 (not an easy task for a pancake lens) and Canon releases an interesting camera for it, I may give it a chance.

The 40 f/2.8 may actually be for the soon-to-be announced mirrorless camera. June is supposed to see announcements of 650D/T4i and mirrorless cameras. Pancake would make more sense for a CSC.

That sounds likely. Since the focal length and aperture would make most sense with a FF sensor, I find it hard to put faith in though, as a FF mirrorless sounds too good to be true.

EF means AF, right? Autofocus?
If it's an AF Canon lens the size of the Pan or comparable Oly, all in. Probably a modern Canonet style body on the way too.
EF stands for "electro focus", so it's safe to assume it's an AF lens.
If this is for the new mirrorless camera, then it becomes very interesting because it seems to imply that it will have an EF mount - which would make other canon lenses directly compatible.

We won't see a FF mirrorless, it'll be the same sensor as the G1X IMO, which is a around a 1.8x crop, so this would be a 72mm FF equivalent.
If it is a native EF lens, it seems a rather weird FL and rather slow.

I bought the Nikkor 45mm f/2.8 P with the Nikon FM3A in 2001. It was the last mechanical camera designed by Nikon and was a minor update of the early 80s FE2. The pancake kit lens was cute and matched the camera finish. It was good optically by F4 but too slow for a prime. Kind of a PITA to focus manually (too small). I still own the FM3A but I replaced the pancake 10 years ago with the Nikkor 50 1.4 AIS. I'd never buy a pancake for my EOS although I love primes as long as they're fast and sharp. A tiny lens on huge body is kinda silly. Makes sense on a 4/3 body as it slims it down enough to fit a coat pocket. I wear one on my E-P3.

I actually love the 40mm focal length for walk around, and historically it was a fairly common focal length back in the day (on full frame 135 film cameras). I actually love my current Ultron on my 5D for those times when I want the kit as small as possible. Keep it the same size and add autofocus, and I'm interested, although losing a stop vs. the Voigtlander is too bad.
