p.1 #1 · IR lens compatibilty question... Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I really want to know if the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens is good with IR. I have been using the IS kit lens for a walk around with a T2i FS body and I would really like a lens that has less of a tendency to create hot spots and that has a little more reach. I have the 17-35 2.8 L and the 24-70 2.8 L and both are great in IR but are short zoom ranges and very HEAVY!

Please let me know if you have tried it in IR. Anyone willing to rent me one to test?

Thanks Matt

You want to contact FM member "BurningHeart"

Here is an email I received from him a couple of years ago on Canon (and other brand) lenses he likes for IR photography (by the way, I use a converted 5D2 and love it):

"Here is a link to a post I made a few months ago. I had tested each of these lenses on my 5D MKII converted to IR with the 715/720 filter so like you are looking also by life pixel.

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/943179/0#8913758

The first column is without a filter on the lens and when I started to get if any spots. The column I added a deep IR filter on the front of the lens and the 3rd a very deep IR filter. For lenses I could not filter normally I held a Kodak Wratten IR filter on the front.

My favorite lens for IR of cours are those deicated to IR
Coastal Optics 60mm, Zeiss ZF-IR 25,50 and 85, Nikon UV 105.

But my non specific IR gems of lens if I didn't have the above would be
Canon 14L,35L,50 1.0L,85L, 100 macro 1st version, 135L, 50-200L
Nikon 85PC (Non E version), 14-24, Nikon 70-180 macro zoom (one of the best)
Leica 100 APO

The older Canon lenses I find are really good with IR much better for lack of hotspots compared to their more modern bretherend.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions let me know.

Wish I could afford some of the IR designed lenses. But, this has been a good year... I have added a 7D, 100 macro, 300 4 L IS and an IR T2i. I am not a working pro, so this does not pay any bills!

Thanks for the responses.

Matt
