I'm seriously thinking of buying a 3 stops ND filter to use in bright daylight so it'll make my black a fpoints visible with the 85 L, I'll wait for this new firmware update and see first...

first of all I would like to be able to just move the joystick without having to tap the other button on the right first. it seems like after I moved it if I wait a minute or so I cannot move the joystick again without having to make it "active" with th other button, that already sucks compared to 5dM2 and 1DMIV.
+1 I tried setting the metering timer to a longer period than the default, but the AF timer remains at a very brief period, so I often find myself trying to tap or move the joystick with no effect.
The camera performed great at a wedding, but the black AF points were _not_ always easy to see. Yes, I have quite a bit of experience, and made things work and didn't miss shots because of the system, but it makes the work harder. I will not apologize for my lack of perfection when I ask for improvements in a camera that has such great potential. I'm glad to have it as is, but await an intelligent FW upgrade.

So with the 5D3, you can still do the same with the joystick, tap it once and then move it around to your new position. You have to enable this in Custom Controls menu. Then if you were outside shooting baseball wouldn't the black point show up well enough to follow the players etc?? I've used my 5D3 mostly for BIF shooting and have been able to track easily with the black points and use the same type of method to tap the joystick and move to a different point. I also use a lot of different points while out shooting birds like you described. I realize you can't see any red outside with the 5D3 but I've found the black to show up really good....Show more →
Yes, I have it set up to select the AF point, but the black AF point gets lost in the VF. And this doesn't just happen for me in brightly lit circumstances. It gets lost in a variety of shooting situations. The red AF point illumination was MUCH easier to see and infinitely more intuitive. What's more, the AF point is not illuminated in AI Servo mode. I think I've explained this ad nauseum.

me too I set the metering even to the longest time but nothing, you still have to tap it....Man there are so many probs with this viewfinder that is unreal...I have been emailing canon supports each and every single time I have a suggestion, because if they do listen, and will try to improve the VF they need to know from us what it is exactly that we want to get improved and how we would like it improved.

obviously you have never used a 1D Mark IV...lol
with the Mark IV you only see the red af that you using,no black AF point and the led does a great job at illuminating the VF in bright daylight, in the dark and with primes, no red flash coming from the side with no smearing all over either...

And then we'd all be complaining about the etched points on the screen making it impossible to see anything but AF points!
Lol!
On a serious note, I've had the chance to take the 5D III out on a couple serious paid gigs. Yes I've had the occasional fumble looking for the AF point (especially under a very bright sunny day) but for the most part, I can deal with it. I am actually surprised that I never found it to be a problem under dim conditions as I originally expected. A missed shot or two here and there is fine and is well compensated by the superb AF I am experiencing with this camera.

Yeah for me it's not a major issue either, but I definitely sympathize with those that find it an irritant. It definitely took a bit of getting used to vs my old Mark II.

the second video makes me mad when I look at it! it is very disgusting to have to deal with this kind of cr@p !! What lens did u use ? It seems a pretty bright lens, since the black af points are kind of light, 1,8 maybe ? Or maybe is the video a bit over exposed? I'm not sure... I don't think Canon will be able to fix this chit either... I have been emailing them over and over about it. we shall see...

and yes the red "traffic light" syndrome is horrible, and some people in here said that you have to be really close to the lens to see it... if the place you are shooting at has weak light you can def see the "traffic light" from far!

OK, both videos showed the viewfinder illumination situation. And?

Annoying and for the 3000 euros a complete flop. Still get the "blur" Canon images are anyone also getting this kind of soft images?
On LCD screen they look gorgeous but when zoomed in they are over sharped and at 100% view with the same as always canon soft problem.
I didn't quite understand what you meant. Where are the soft or blurred images you mentioned? Are you viewing them on the LCD and then you zoom it to 100%?
p.19 #16 · 5d M III Viewfinder illumination and af points!
pompo the lens is Canon 50 f1.4 this helped for illustrating the red traffic light and just that. Not a fancy video to report anything besides that. Client will see the red light if you are taking pic on a dark environment.
AGeoJO, the idea of the videos was to illustrate the problem people are reporting. I do not know about you but I find it too much disturbing not be able to see the focus points under certain situations and in a camera that costs so much money. I'm not that kind of photographer that likes to buy mambo jambo for a lot of money only to find out that it does not fit my work.
The blurred images are the images that Canon cameras produced for some years that are almost in focus but in fact when you zoom them in to 100% they are 98% therewith a softness. The images I mentioned were photographed in CR2 and viewed directly on the LCD zoomed in all the way and in the back LCD and later on in the computer. I will try to upload them here.
I think everyone has it's photography style and I'm not really a fan boy of Canon/Nikon discussions what I feel is that people should get their opinions so that manufacturers improve their cameras with our experience.
I also ask where are all the beta tester photographers who tested this cameras before they came out? Why wasn't this addressed to Canon when they have it to test, where is the opinion of the photographer caught with one 5D MarkIII in a safari, didn't he noticed this and reported to Canon?
Worst will the 1DX will come with the same problem/situation how pros will react to this?
Why is the 1DX delayed again, could it be because of all this problems Canon cannot fix?
We are talking about lots of money invested in a tool to perform a job (pro or amateur) and in the end it completely fails and Canon do nothing about it simply say next version of the camera will have it fix. Imagine this on your brand new car, comes with a problem on the breaks you kill 2 people who will be responsible? And the manufacturer says to you that in the next version they will fix the breaks.
I think that they do not respect us who buy their products, it's all a marketing strategy to sell cameras and now video/cameras. I just wish for once they would give us a good Canon Camera with no focus problems plain and simple.
Got an Olympus OM-D E5 and that thing for 1000 euros focus fast and everything comes in focus and when not in focus it's completely blurred and you also see the focus point clearly. Never caught one image I took 95% on focus or with a soft focus problem.
I don't think Canon could fix this just by firmware because the camera viewfinder is build differently... let's pray they find a way has they did with the "Gaffe Tape" for the Leaking Light issue on the top LCD.

I mostly use 1.4 and 1.2 so its a MAJOR pain in the butt to the point now that I dont even want to get rid of my 1D Mark IV now (was planning on selling it to get a 1DX) I have used it yesterday in bright daylight with the 70-200 2.8 and at leats I can se ethe black af points good, I kept the beep on, but depending on the shoot you cannot always keep it on, of course. Still the red AF confirmation (even with a "slow" 2.8 lens in bright daylight ) doesn't show....
I agree where the heck were the Canon testers? I'm thinking that they did realize about all these problems but for some reasons Canon chose to go the cheaper " traffic light " way...

Here are some CR2 images taken at a festival last weekend with the 5d MarkIII where you can check for the softness of the focus system. The "Blur" effect has I call it previously.
p.19 #20 · 5d M III Viewfinder illumination and af points!
maybe because I never sharpen my images, dunno, I just add a little clarity to them, even in my closep headhsots with the 5D M3 I dont see any softness
