Yes, there was a hardware problem. Cameras that were fixed were literally given a blue dot by Canon. There is some question as to whether Canon's fixes in hardware and firmware ever got the AF to be where it was supposed to be. Can anyone verify if this firmware solved the problem? - I don't have the lens with me at the moment. I know the phenomenon is not addressed in the description, but worth a shot?
I don't think it has been addressed in the just updated firmware yet. There is no mention of that in the description whatsoever. I am anxiously waiting for another firmware update, too. In the meantime, if you have to use any of those lenses, set it on on the single AF mode. I know it is not what we bargain for but we don't have much choice at this point. Canon will fix this issue sooner or later but it better be sooner!
Must mean it is a bit more complicated than we might have hoped. Right now I'm not lucky enough to own either of those lenses but the 200 f/2 is on my short list so I'll be watching and hoping for an update. I really hope this isn't going to affect the new 600f/4 as that is already preordered.
It is hard to say how long the development cycle and regression testing is for a firmware update. The problems gets identified, looked into and then beta/alpha tested. All the while more issues start to trickle in; namely the 200/F2 issue and then that one gets put in the cauldron and looked into, hopefully resolved and a new update released.
That said. the fixed in FW 1.1.2 may have predated the 200 F2 issue.
I found a solution - selling my Canon gear. I've sold most of it and no longer have a Canon body, but I'm still holding onto my 200/2, 85L. They will be the last to go.

I know the light leak wasn't exactly a major problem for most people, but that is one sloppy fix.
The AF on the 5D1 was horrible, and it was completely unacceptable on the 5D2. After putting up with the limitations of the 5D2 for years, this is the reward?
I find it interesting that you are bellyaching about a prosumer 5D Mark I that was released in 2006. At the time, there was nothing like it on the market. Nothing. It took Nikon more than 2 years to come up with something remotely similar to it. It's image quality and its price for a full-frame sensor was unrivaled. Period. And at the time if you wanted a better AF system, well, then you could move up the 1Ds or 1D. It was what it was.
As for the 5D Mark II, that did not have the best of AF, agreed. But it was no slouch either. And it performed very well.
Whatever you are moving to will not be that much of an improvement. And if you think your shooting experience will improve that much, or you will find more keepers, I sincerely doubt it. You'll just keep whining about their product line. I'm sure of it.
After shooting kids sports yesterday with the 5DIII and 70 200 IS II I am with the guy who said you'd have to pry it out of my cold dead hands. I always thought my keeper rate on sports was just me, with my 5DIII the world just changed for me.

Good to know, because even with my 7D that lens is excellent (great for the zoo!), so can't wait to get it on the 5D III where I'm expecting high success rate.
