p.1 #1 · 5D2 vs 5D3 - how much better is the 5D3's sensor?
How much better is the 5D3's sensor compared to the 5D2's? Are we talking about a major upgrade or a more modest one in terms of IQ at low and high ISOs. I am only interested in improvements in RAW images please, not the JPEG engines. Thank you.

Based on the samples I've seen and analyzed, the objective improvement in raw noise is about 1/2 stop. But there's also the elimination of High ISO banding and what appears to my eyes better High ISO dynamic range and color fidelity, so I think the subjective difference may be up to 1 stop or more, depending on the content of the image.
As for low ISO I haven't seen much if any difference.

After putting some 2500 shots on mine, I will say that the sensor isn't a whole world better than the 5D2. It's a bit better. But it's not earth shattering. And in my opinion it has way more amp glow than the 5D2.
But as a whole camera, the 5D3 is miles ahead of the 5D2. Like, it actually focuses!

1/3 of a stop improvement at ISO-6400; a bit more at higher ISOs.
The 5DIII also has a more "pure" red color filter, resulting in slightly better colors.
The DxO test will give us exact numbers soon.
Overall, very nice refinements over the 5DII but nothing major, really.
Much bigger improvement in JPG, since the JPG engine in the 5DIII is as good as a good RAW converter.

Firstly given how bizarre DXO's lens results are I would not place one bit of faith in anything they write anywhere at anytime.
As for the 5 series the AF is far superior very accurate and immpretty impressed.
As for ISO it more than half a stop as the remaining noise is far more grain like and more pleasant looking.
Very impressed..

Stan, is the amp glow as bad as the 1Ds3? Noticeable difference from the 5D2? I like doing lots of long exposure night shots. Is the 5D3 not best suited for this? Thanks.

Based on the comparisons so far I haven't seen any considerable difference in IQ between the two cameras however AF is a main priority of mine, and the 5DIII is clearly much better in that department. I can live with an incremental IQ upgrade.

In my book, the amp glow is as bad as on the 1Ds3 and is pronounced on some 3200 and all 6400 and above shots. Definitely worse than 5D2.

There seems to be some variance in published reports and it might be due to software issues processing the Mark III RAW files. For example, there seems to be a bug in the DPP software when using the "High Quality" setting, which results in softer images. Also, I would disable all sharpness parameters, NR and lens corrections when comparing photos with the Mark II. As Canon and Adobe fix their RAW processors to cope with the new RAW format, I bet we'll see better results.
Thus far my impression is that the Mark III is a step better than the Mark II at low ISO and significantly better above ISO 800.

Maybe people that actually OWN the camera could give an informed opinion, as opposed to those who've seen a report somebody else made based on what another guy posted?

my returned 5d2 had a back focusing problem on the top point. I didn't check out anything else after that. For the money that we are paying for the camera, it's NOT acceptable to have 1/9 focus points not working.
