Amen! No better place to put the new camera to the test. A used camera should have a lower customs, I would imagine.
Not likely to declare it at customers, but if you were to declare it or if you got stopped and they found the camera box and other bits you would be charged the full import duty which was negate the purpose of buying it from the states.

I did this to get some canon gear about 5 years ago. Awesome trip.
I took a large padded envelope out with me and shipped all the boxes & packaging back to myself, and carried the lenses in my hand luggage = nothing to declare at customs
And the general post office is only a couple of blocks from B&H It's just the warranty & charger you have to worry about because at least the manual will be in english.
Are the US D4 & D800 chargers worldwide voltage with an external cable? Canon used to make wall warts and they didn't work in Europe (maybe deliberately!).

I have been looking at flight prices, £350-400 and D800 is equiv. £1880. This could be a winner once b&h actually have stock on the shelves the only stumbling block is the 8.8% tax that cannot be claimed back but I think flying elsewhere may negate any savings in sales tax.

Just go to Copenhagen to buy it. £2100 including tax at photographica.com, and you don't have VAT to worry about afterwards. You can get D800 + a weekend in a beautiful city + no VAT worries for less than UK list. That's my plan for this summer
Well, I don't know bout you guys but I'm thinking that we should organise to meet up and all head over to US or Copenhagen or wherever and go and get our new cameras. Take a few photos, have a few beers and then head back.

I think we have a winner! Now lets just hope Nikon ship enough cameras over there.

Give FM-ers in NYC a 'heads up' and we'll meet you for a pint before you head home.

If you have somewhere to stay in the US outside of New York, have it mailed there before you arrive and no tax at all is levied. I think both Adorama and B&H will even throw in free shipping too.

- Can you imagine the face of the guy who has a brown truck turn up with 52 D4s and 160 D800s all in one go

As long as everyone has a reserved camera before we set off otherwise I fear there could be some fisticuffs in the shop

That is a very good idea. When you shipped the boxes back what did you put down on the shipping/customs details?
I cant remember having to fill anything out, if I did it was probably something like 'printed material'.. It was slowest-possible post service. New York's amazing, if you've never been its a fantastic place for a long weekend.
I mailed some stuff from the general post office around the corner from B&H and it arrived home the same day I did. Can't complain.
Manhattan is certainly worth a visit, but don't rely on being able to break the law and skip through customs without paying. Many get away with it but not everyone.
