I just have to wonder which variable is causing so many to hit the NEX-7 video button accidently while many others have yet to accidently hit it even once (I fall into that group). Is it hand size, hand grip angle/ placement, some combination of both or what?

I find that I tend to inadvertently hit the video button when grabbing the camera while quickly bringing the camera to my eye. I don't hit it a ton, but I occasionally do.

I've done it once or twice.

I wish it did something else, maybe if it SWITCHED TO HDR MODE JPEG MODE and did the shots immediately. Or something useful like that.

FlyPenFly, that's a great idea. Would like to see that kind of option on my C3 as well.

On another note, has anyone had their Sigma 30 completely lock up during shooting? I was out walking the other evening, and the Sigma stopped focusing completely. It required a power cycle to fix, but still - pretty odd.

The camera was on and awake, and I was trying to manually focus close after taking a shot, and realized that the focusing mechanism wasn't doing anything. I then switched to AF, and still nothing. I then switched the camera off and on, and the lens was back to normal. I didn't experience any hiccups during the rest of the shoot.

I think I hit the video button a lot on my 5n because I am used to using back button focus and exposure lock on my Canon dslrs...

Received an EOS-NEX adapter today (in case I should ever want to shoot with the Sigma 8-16 on the NEX) and of course I had to test the Samyang 35 on it first thing. Felt every bit as ridiculous as I imagined.

I probably won't be using the EOS lenses on the NEX very often - if at all, but I guess it doesn't hurt to have the adapter.

Here's a snap with the Samy.

Would this be a good time to switch to NEX? I've been eyeing the 5N, is it due for an update soon? I currently have a Fuji S5 with a few lenses, mainly use a 50mm and 11-16mm shooting as a hobby.

I think hand size probably plays the biggest issue with the video button. I never once hit it on accident, but when I'd grip the camera, my thumb was always well to the left. I think those with smaller hands probably would end up gripping the camera a bit closer to the right edge, which of course would make their thumbs more likely to fall under the video button.

That sounds very likely. I was actually looking at the way I held the NEX-7 the other day and also noticed that when I go to grip it (right hand in position as if to shake someone's hand), my thumb actually goes far to the left of the thumb grip and comes back to locate the left side of the grip. No way would it hit the video button unless I just randomly jabbed at the back of the camera. For myself, it probably also has something to do with using a wrist strap perhaps.

There is a NEX-F5 strongly rumored to come out within the next month or so.

yeah, my thumb is nowhere near the button when i grip it during use. it's only when i pick the camera out of a bag or pocket or when i shift from waist level grip to eye level grip that i ever hit it.

Hi,
I am looking for a wide angle lens for my NEX7.... the widest lens I currently have is a Zeiss C/Y 28mm, so I am looking for something wider than 20mm.
I don't want to mess with cornerfix, so I would skip RF lenses, and I don't want bulky lenses... so the search become difficult, given that obviously I want a high quality lens

I evaluated the Voigtlander 20mm for Nikon SLR, but it is not so wide... what do you think of Nikon 18/3.5 AIS?
Any other suggestion (keeping in mind my constraints and the search for quality)?

Thanks
Francesco

Francesco,

As far as I know, you are just not going to find something small that would not require cornerfix. The Voigtlander 15 certainly has magenta corners on my Nex 7. You might look at the Zeiss ZF 18mm - Nikon mount. From what I have read, it is a different lens from the highly regarded ZM 18 (leica mount), but it is still very fine. Of course, the adapter adds about an inch to the length of the lens.

For me, at least at this moment, I'm using my Sony/Zeiss 24mm, or my CZ 45mm and making panoramas out of a few images (in situations where I would shoot an ultrawide) rather than trying to get a wider lens that I am really happy with. But I am really on the fence about this. Who knows... I might buy a ZM 18 and deal with Cornerfix.

I use the OM18 on my 5N and it's very good.

Right now, though it just barely comes in under 20mm, the best option imo is the Sigma 19mm at around $200! I expect within the next two months we will see a very good wide angle zoom so for now, the Sigma 19 and soon this higher end "G" wide angle zoom.

Has anyone had issues with the NEX touchscreen losing it's anti-glare (or whatever it is) coating over time? MY 5N is not even a year old and I'm seeing noticeable wear, mostly along the right edge. I should have used a scree protector; in any case it just seems like too much wear from normal use. I'm considering sending it in to see if it will be covered by warranty.

i had the same thing happen with my NEX-3. i never tried to get it covered under warranty though as i had been pretty rough with it. i just tried to be more careful with it so it wouldn't spread beyond the edges. for what it's worth, i found the protective screens to produce far to much glare to be useful. of course i couldn't put a evf on the NEX-3, i have one on my NEX-7 and it does bother me.

Hmmm same thing happened to my Sony TX5 but it has a resistive touch screen. The camera works perfectly except for the touch screen which is a problem since all the controls are on the touch screen.

Cross posted from the E-M5 thread but thought NEX shooters might find this interesting as well.

Small preview of my weekend test.

C3 was using a Sigma 19mm, E-M5 was using the Panny 14-45.

Shot it under exposed. Boosted exposure +2.0 and shadows +100 in LR4.

Will be doing a lot more tests.

The comparison with the NEX-7 should be a lot more fun but resizing and doing all that is a bit of a pain.

RAW on both of course.

However, I'm very surprised how well the E-M5 did here in this made up torture test. In the past, this sort of torture test would have had MFT fall on it's face. The C3 retains a bit more shadow detail but the E-M5 isn't terrible here either.

In the normally exposed file, the E-M5 seems to have a weaker AA filter and has overall a bit more detail than the C3. I'm not 100% sure if that has to with funkiness from the difference in aspect ratio however.

My anti glare coating on my nex 3 wore so badly, I just toolkit off and never looked back. Removing it made my camera look mint again, and never saw any detrimental efect of just taking it off. In fact, I never knew it was the anti glare coating until reading this thread, thought it was a very difficult to remove protection like you get on any screen tou buy these days like the iPhone,
