I'm starting to think that 1dIV and 5DmkIII may be the best combo (unless you can afford a 1dx and 5dmkIII combo). However, I just got the 5dmkII and absolutely love it as my first FF camera. Haven't touched the 7D since and 7D will be replaced by 5dmkIII but I will watch 1dIV prices and may sell the 5dmkII and get a mkIV as it may be the last of a very unique (high FPS, 1.3crop, F8 focusing) wildlife/birding cam.

I know this is based on specs and previews, but anyhow....
In the UK a 1DIV and a 5D3 (with grip) aren't too far apart price-wise, so is there actually any reason to take the 1D over the 5D? I actually put in an order a couple of days ago for the 1DIV but have swapped it for a 5D3 preorder.
5D3 has advantages:
22MP
Digic 5
FF
Low noise apparently
1DIV has advantages:
Slightly better weather sealing
A few more fps
Dedicated processor for AF
Both have:
Vertical shutter button (when grip is used)
61-pt AF
So, unless you NEED 10fps over 6fps, only shoot with telephotos or plan on working in a shower, surely the new-tech of the 5D3 is a no-brainer? Have I missed something?...Show more →
As far I remember 1D IV has 45 AF points ...?
And here in germany a new 1D IV is still about € 4.000 - 4.300, so nearly € 1000 more, than the 5D III will be.

Thanks for the input but I'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to mean. Just because a 1D4 is aimed mainly at sports photographers and PJs doesn't mean it doesn't work for other applications.
And yes, it's a personal choice, but the whole point of a forum is to gather opinions and experiences.
Agreed, Alex. Most certainly either can be used and they both perform but depending on what you are shooting, one could perform better than the other.
Understood you were looking for opinions and FM is a great place to get them. Point I was attempting to make and quite possibly not doing a good job of it, is that other opinions and experiences are great for what they are as long as you can in turn evaluate how they match up to your way of seeing the world through a view finder. Just because something works well for someone does not guarantee it will work the same for you.
What ever you end up with, here is hoping it provides you a great deal of satisfaction and enjoyment. Aren't we fortunate to have such choices?
Did you forget to mention the 1D can AF at f/8.........perhaps not a fair comparison since I never saw many 5D people using 2x TCs and long tele's.......

I do that, except I use my 1DIV for it, not my 5D.

I don't buy the '1D is professional and 5D is enthusiast' argument. It just doesn't wash. Both are just tools and lots of pros use 5Ds. 1D snobbery can be a real distraction here (I do know as I went from the 1D to 5D series a while back. You do miss the 1D ownership for an intangible reason).
To make this decision based on facts rather than sentiment, see below. As has been said endlessly, yes, if you shoot field sports or little fast flying birds then the cropped 1D with dual processors and 10fps is likely to win. Unless a single factor is totally vital for you, an overall average of features is useful for the rest of us:
(note, a couple of items should probably have been merged (e.g. inc and ex VAT prices) but even if you roughly halve the number of 5D 'wins', it's 6 vs 4 and an overall win for the 5D)...Show more →
What's your basis for the Auto ISO comparison - as in what makes the 5d3 better? You got some testing behind this?

I have the 1d IV and it's great. I use it with a 1ds II for weddings, portraits etc. I am getting the 5d3 to replace the 1ds II because I feel it compliments the 1d IV and will give me the best of both worlds.

You left out a very important metric, that would be "pixels per duck". If you crop the 5D3 image to 1.3 crop size you would cover the image with 13 Mpixels, where the 1D4 covers it with its 18 Mpixels. A substantial resolution difference that goes to the 1D4.
Looks like 1D4 and 5D3 would be a nice Canon combo.

I think this comparison is a bit biased to make the new 5DIII win by a huge margin
I mean two points for the 5Ds AF !! 61-45 AF points. And 41-39 cross type. But not even mention that the 1D4 has AF at f/8. Who prefer to have 41 cross type that AF to f/5,6 instead of having 39 cross type and AF at f/8
And two extra points for the 5Ds LCD also!!
And one point for having the battery grip that gives you more shots. And then another point for removing it I don't belive the grip and extra battery will give you more shots than the 1D4 either. None of the grips have done that before. The 1D4 gives you a few thousend shots before it's battery is empty.
But the 5DIII looks to be a really good body. And is worth the $3500 IMO
B&H just charged me $3500 for the camera. Is the 5d3 shipping to my house? cuz that's what B&H policy is. only charged when the camera is ready to ship..

I recall the 1d3 with it's "new tech" AF feature not living up to expectations, so even with all the advancements it still comes down to what you shoot. The 1D4 is more a multi-purpose camera for shooting nearly everything vs. the 5D2 or 5D3 imo. Maybe that <2% of shots I wasn't able to acheive with a 1D4 because of "new tech" will force me to become more creative with what I have.
That comparison chart reminds of car magazine comparisons without driving the car to make a decision. You want "new tech" you have two choices, 5D3 or 1DX and your wallet. But if you want to compare cameras like a magazine then why not throw the D800, D3S, and D4 in the mix? Also if you going to do a chart weight what's really important in camera features, not minor stuff that creates the artificial bias.. When I bought the 1D4 I think maybe 3 of the items on your list were important, I mean "LCD size" and "# of processors", really

I'm about 99.9999% sure that what you are seeing is a "pending" charge (at least that is what my bank calls it). What they do is put a pending charge through to the bank to see if the bank will honor it (kind of a credit check) but don't put through the actual charge till they ship. The same thing happened on my 24-70 II B&H pre-order. It disappeared after a few days. I currently have the pending charge for the 5D III showing on my account and it should also disappear in a few days.
