Is Apple doing that manufacturing and assembly in Japan?

All camera stores I have visited in Hong Kong have quite a bit of stock. In principle a not so good sign since normally tech products always sell out here right away on release.

If they don't feel comfortable moving it out of Japan, and the only disadvantage is that the nitial stock is slow moving into stores, I'm okay with leaving it in Japan. So you have to wait a month. Patience is a virtue.

body only

it gave an estimated date of may-June at first, then I got an update a couple days later that it'd be in sooner, then next thing I know I get an email that it's shipped

Canon did a really good job at having a lot of stock ready for this camera. Probably now that Amazon and BH have had tons of their preorders cancelled when they couldn't meet the initial demand, they will be meeting new orders much faster as Canon seems to be keeping new stock rolling in every week.

Do you know if Canon still plans on the 5D3 Pro Kit (24-70 II bundle instead of 24-105)?
Thanks.

Where did you hear about said Pro Kit? I would have seriously considered such a kit if it could have saved me some money on that new 24-70.

From some of the early 5d3 announcement talk from Canon. Much of the talk came from overseas subsidiaries but I did see someone list a version for the US that would be, I think it was like, $300 or $400 off getting them separately.

But I haven't heard of the Pro Kit since, especially nothing since from Canon USA.

It would help make the 5D3 price more palatable (I don't see why it costs $500 more than the D800, overall it's no better for sure.) (I definitely don't want the regular kit with the stinking 24-105 again. My cheap tamron was better and I bet the new tamron 24-70 VC will be way better than the 24-105 so I really don't see the point of the 24-105 kit myself.)

I agree the 24-105 kit is pointless for this highend type camera. A kit with a high end lens like the new 24-70 would make much more sense but I doubt it will happen I also agree that the 5D3 should be equally priced to the D800.

The 24-105 is actually quite a good lens and a good choice as a companion for the 5D3...a new 24-70 might well be better but it will cost almost as much as the camera and thus be a poor choice as a kit lens.....

That is straight-up ignorance right there. The 24-105 is a great lens by anyone's standard and is perfectly suited for the 5D3.

I also must say that the 24-105 is a very good lens, and it truly meets the expectations of having the L designation. I owned my 24-70 first, but bought a 24-105 to use for where the IS would help out. I found I used them equally over the years, with the f 2.8 of the 24-70 helping me out in low light to see better, and the IS helping out when that mattered. Optically the 24-70 might be a little bit better in some areas, but the 24-105 is plenty good for lots of reasons. And for the obvious category of a walk around lens, the 24-105 with IS and the longer reach is the perfect match to the 5D, thus it is also the ideal kit lens.

Another thing that some people forget is that the 24-105 was developed kind of for the 5D, and was released at the same time as the original 5D, as a kit lens for it, and of course for general use.

Please don't call me ignorant on here again. If you really want to behave like that then dpreview.com is a great site.

Putting that aside, what I was saying is not that the 24-105 isn't a great lens as it is actually my most used lens and is absolutely great. What I intended to purvey in my post is that I don't think most people need a kit lens option when purchasing the 5D3. Most people purchasing the 5D3 already have a large assortment of lenses and as we saw in the first few weeks almost all the kits were stripped apart and sold separately (mine included). I think that offering a new high priced lens at a good discount as a kit lens with the 5D3 would be a better option or probably offering no kit would make the most sense for Canon.

well the two I tried had nasty edges on 5D2 even f/8-f/10 near the wide end and my 24 1.4 II looked much better to me even at f/10

it's possible this lens has a lot of variation with only some smaller number being great but who many do I go through to get a good 24-105?

my tamron 28-75 was sharper center and edge too and it cost me like $300.

if you don't care about fine edge to edge landscape details the 24-105 is nice and very convenient though and maybe if you get a better copy it's great even if you do care, maybe third time would be the charm

anyway, the two i tried had the worst edge to edge performance on my 5D2 of any L I have tried on it, i just wasn't seeing $1000 bucks there myself

anyway this is getting off the 5D3 pre-order topic and many do seem to love the 24-105 (oddly i've noticed it is the lens most often on favorite canon lens lists AND also the lens most often on least favorite L lens lists, either people want different things out of it or the copy to copy variation really is pronounced with this lens i guess)

It's amazing the tired nonsense that gets spouted around here repeatedly.

Year after year, those who fancy themselves particularly professional (or something) feel obligated to slam the 24-105, a fine multi-use lens and a perfect complement to a full frame camera as a walking-around lens. You may not like it, for whatever reason (and your reason may even be legitimate!), but that has absolutely no bearing on whether or not it's an excellent choice on a ff body for others.

And this nonsense that gets trotted out that the 5d3 "shouldn't cost $500 more than the D800." It sold out practically everywhere in this country at that price, and is still hard to get; you think Canon should have foregone that $500 per body for thousands of bodies, out of the the goodness of their heart (and because you think you know more about how good should be priced than they do)? ROFLMAO.
