This is good news as I'm receiving my NEX-7 today.

I've been toying with the idea of picking up a OM-D and a PannyLeica 45mm F2.8 Macro for my macro needs due to the advantageous DoF of MFT but I might rethink that path if I need the funds for a NEX lens.

Excited for the "G" zoom which I expect will be similar to the widely praised 16-50mm F2.8 that is the kit lens on the new Alphas.

I bet the big aperture prime will be a 35mm F1.4 with a 50mm equiv. They have a big hole there.

I wonder what the large aperture standard prime will look like.

Me? I'm more interested in a high performance 12-14mm-ish prime.

I'm guessing the standard lens will be a "NEXified" version of the 35/1.8 for a-mount and will be similar in size to the new NEX 50/1.8.

I wonder what their definition large aperture of standard prime is? a ultra wide angle zoom would fill nice gap.

I wonder how the "standard zoom" will differ from the existing 18-55?

Looks like they are filling in the right parts of the line-up in a sensible way. Will be really good to make the NEX line a bit more viable as a "system" without having to resort to mostly Alt-options.

Having watched m43 go through this already over the past couple of years expect no one to be happy with the order and speed with which the road map gets filled out - the end of 2013 is a long way away to those who anxiously want "their" lens!

If I might be so bold to ask a question about all this, In Sony's mind, what makes a "G" lens a "G" lens, and why couldn't/wouldn't they make some of the other lenses they seems to be planning, "G" lenses? What are they holding back from these non-G lenses? And if the "G" lenses (not to mention the Zeiss lenses) are the best they can produce, why aren't the lenses they are producing the best they can do -- especially, given they produce a very demanding, pro/serious enthusiast-oriented, body in the NEX-7 which would benefit from the best lenses. Sony's lens strategy to me is not obvious, and on the surface makes limited sense.

I think the G lenses are a carry over from the Minolta days. They probably have a different assembly line for their cheap SAM stuff (35mm F1.8, 85mm F2.8, etc) and their SSM line with premium glass and more QC is done elsewhere along with the Zeiss ZA line which are all individually signed by the Assembler/QC person.

The cheap Sony SAM stuff is actually really, really good for the money.

The G lens used to be Minolta's highest end line that were usually the fastest lens in their focal length with circular apertures, AD and aspheric glass, metal build, internal focus, etc. A lot of those features are in standard lens lines, now, and it seems that Sony saves the G designation for complex zooms, and the Zeiss designation for high end primes. The only Sony primes with a G designation are left over Minolta designs.

Affordable lens lines have gotten very good and already have AD elements, circular apertures, etc., so it seems that we're mostly just missing the speed and build quality in non-G primes. A NEX version of the SAM 35/1.8 would likely be very good.

*edit: I just remembered Sony's new 500/4 G lens, so I guess there is a new G lens primes, and it seems G could be reserved for high end zooms and long teles.

i think the difference is like the difference between canon L and non-L glass. one has lower build quality and is designed to a lower price for mass market, the other has higher build quality (and hopefully quality control) and the price point the lens designers are given is higher. it turns out to be good from the marketing and product segmentation point of view to have separate lens lines. unfortunately sony isn't doing themselves any favors my muddying the distinctions by having both G lenses and zeiss lenses. it's not like they're really "holding anything back" in their non-G lenses, it's just they're designing them for a different price point, the one that they can sell a high volume of lenses at. nobody produces the best lenses they can produce (we'll maybe leica lux's), everybody gives the lens designers a price point and says: "this is the type of lens we want and how much we want the lens to cost to produce, now make it happen".

Where are the G/ZA lenses made? Where are the SAM/Budget lenses made? Need to go home and check but I think the difference is Japan/China.

I hope so, that's one of my all-time favourite 35's. But I'm hoping for a little more speed since I've already got the 35/1.8 DT and a CV 35/1.7

No more Zeiss lenses? That sucks. I've been dreaming of a ZA 14/2.8.

I'm sure there will be, but the Zeiss lenses come out at a slow rate and the next ones are expected to be in A mount (a ZA 50 SSM and possibly something else).

I'd kill for a ZA E 14/2.8 though. That and a ZA E 58/1.2 would make a great combo with my 24/1.8.

G 18-55/2.8
Not sure & don't care about the rest of the zooms
8or10-18 for the WA zoom

35/1.8(1.4)
85/2
~24/2.8 (snap=toy?) pancake/compact

Congrats on the getting the 7, I was told mine would be in @ the end of Jan. I emailed them a few days ago for an update, I was told on Monday possibly the end of February, and got my call today that it's in, so color me happy.

am i the only one that thinks 85mm is too long for a portrait lens on aps-c?

congrats on the NEX-7!

Thanks, yeah, I agree, 50 is better for that purpose, I was using the 85L on my 40D, and it was tough to shoot indoors, you always seemed to be too close, the 50L was my next lens, and felt much better, more so with the 1.3x of my 1DIII, I can't see why it would be different on a NEX.
That doesn't mean an 85 couldn't be useful.
What I really want is a 35/1.4 and 10/2.8
Edit:
This would be my ideal lineup:
best IQ & fast
35/1.4
50/1.4
85/1.4

compact for hiking/travel/stealth
10/2.8
16/2.8
24/2.8
35/2
50/2
85/2.8

Sure, there may be some new Zeiss lenses for E-mount, but WHEN? Apparently according to this chart, not for another 2 years. WTF are they waiting for?

This is type of information that will lead me to cancel my NEX-7 order, becuase there aren't enough of their best lenses (Zeiss and G) to put on it -- especially given that some of the alt rangefinder lenses just don't do so well on the body. The consumer Sony lenses that I've had -- the 18-55mm and the 16mm, just are nothing to get excited about, and probably don't stand up to the demands of a 24mp APS-c sensor. At the rate they are going, there will be a NEX-7 replacement before they give us any more high quality lenses to match the high quality body. Sony had the potential to capture and dominate the high-end enthusiast market with the NEX-7. But they need serious lenses to do it. This market may just wind-up in the hands of the Panasonic and Olympus as their is (at the very least) the perception that you get high quality lenses (and a good range of them) for their top of the line bodies (OM-D, GX-1, GH2) and I suppose you can toss in the Ricoh GXR into that mix.

Why does it take Sony/Zeiss so long to produce lenses? Or why is there no commitment to make new lenses? Olympus can seemingly toss out new quality lenses at will. WTF is wrong with Sony/Zeiss?
