Zeiss...I don't know, but part of it might be that Sony is a huge electronics company an not an optics company. I don't know how many Minolta engineers they kept online for their camera division, but they may still be feeling out optical design somewhat. Olympus, on the other hand, has been making insanely good SMALL optics for a very long time. I think Olympus' experience from the original Pen and OM days are helping them a lot with developing small, yet extremely high quality optics. The original Pen F lenses were really, really sharp as well (and they had to be given the amount of enlargement needed to print larger.) Olympus is the only company I know of that regularly uses 60lp MTF curves. Though, of course, Panasonic has released some really high quality lenses as well (some in cooperation with Leica, some not). The Panasonic 8mm fisheye, 7-14, 20/1.4, 25/1.4 (with Leica), 45/2.8 (with Leica) are all outstanding.
Sony does need to kick it into gear, though with regards to the NEX lenses...they may miss the boat if they don't pick it up soon.

Sure, there may be some new Zeiss lenses for E-mount, but WHEN? Apparently according to this chart, not for another 2 years. WTF are they waiting for?
This is type of information that will lead me to cancel my NEX-7 order, becuase there aren't enough of their best lenses (Zeiss and G) to put on it -- especially given that some of the alt rangefinder lenses just don't do so well on the body. The consumer Sony lenses that I've had -- the 18-55mm and the 16mm, just are nothing to get excited about, and probably don't stand up to the demands of a 24mp APS-c sensor. At the rate they are going, there will be a NEX-7 replacement before they give us any more high quality lenses to match the high quality body. Sony had the potential to capture and dominate the high-end enthusiast market with the NEX-7. But they need serious lenses to do it. This market may just wind-up in the hands of the Panasonic and Olympus as their is (at the very least) the perception that you get high quality lenses (and a good range of them) for their top of the line bodies (OM-D, GX-1, GH2) and I suppose you can toss in the Ricoh GXR into that mix.

I don't expect NEX Zeiss lenses anytime soon. That being said, Sony prime lenses of "normal" quality are usually good, and I wouldn't say that they lack when compared to anything from m4/3 or Samsung NX, etc.. The Sony 16 is a questionable performer, but it was designed when Sony thought of NEX as nothing more than a P&S upgrade camera. The popularity of the system forced Sony to take the system in a more enthusiast direction, and I see no reason to think that the 24/1.8, upcoming fast standard (my guess is 35/1.8,) 50/1.8 OSS, upcoming mid tele, and maybe even the 30 Macro aren't up to the quality of their m4/3 equivalents. If the wide zoom is any good, then it'll be a pretty complete system. Of course, I look at NEX as an alt. lens system, and I won't be buying any of the above lenses.

I'm seriously considering cancelling my NEX7 order based on this info. Not enough lenses from Sony and worse of all, the NEX7 seem to have issues with many wide angle legacy lenses which I planned to use it with. What a waste of the NEX7.

For those interested, an English version was released, and now they are saying Sony will release 3 new NEX bodies this year, with the firs tin April. Odd, considering the NEX-7 is still no where. Makes me really think about my NEX-7 preorder...
p.2 #7 · NEX: Four new lenses in 2012, Four more in 2013
If they are on a one year replace cycle, then 3 bodies seem about right. The C3 and 5N updates were rather minor, all things considered (although a new sensor did really boost performance). An update for the Nex 7 seems sillier though, considering its still hard to get hold of, but keep in mind that these release plans were probably not counting on it being delayed for 6 months.

Hey, I already cancelled my preorder, too, but we're in the minority, I'd imagine. The camera is apparently selling like crazy, and that is before this lens road map was announced.

I was at my local camera store today and they have over 45 pre-orders for the NEX 7 and only expecting a few units this month. I'm somewhere in the middle of the pile. I think I will cancel mine and I agree, we are in the minority.

It would be a drag to finally get a NEX 7 now followed by an April announcement of a NEX 7N with a new sensor that works better on wide angle lenses.f
^^ This is exciting news (for those of us without NEX 7 anyway) and it's the hope that's been staving off me buying an EVF for my 5N, as I'm curious what will come along.
Strangely, I'm not that excited about the lens announcements. I guess I feel pretty happy with my trio of CV lenses right now. After using such compact little beauties I don't know if I'll want to change anything... but I still would like a viable 35mm equivalent.

agreed.
i'm also not really excited about the lens announcements. i've finally come to terms with the fact that i just don't like autofocus lenses. a normal pancake would be nice though for when i hand the camera to somebody else...

Me too. I feel pretty good about my lenses at this point, as long as I'm on aps-c format, so I'm not all that interested anymore in NEX lenses, but I wouldn't mind a pancake standard prime for occasional use.

So, Sony has failed to deliver any decent pancake lenses, or even reasonably sized/desirable regular lenses. What's my best bet for pocketable camera with manual movie control and a solid sensor? NX200? X-1 Pro? OM-D?

What exactly are ya looking for? If you need AF, and the new roadmap doesn't suit you, there are also new Sigma primes coming. link

+1 on the pancake. If some quality E mount pancake lenses appear then I will become more interested.

I think the operating word here is "pocketable"...

Wouldn't that be just great? ;-(
If not a NEX-7N, perhaps something that combines the best of the 5N and the 7. Hard to see them producing something cheaper than the C3 ($499 w/lens is already a attractive low price point), so I expect more bodies in the middle range. And who knows, the Nex-7 should have been in the market for 3 months already -- a replacement by the end on the year is not unreasonable.
All giving me additional reasons to cancel my NEX-7 order (or get a 5N for now). Besides, I've got 2 D800e's on pre-order and they will almost certainly get here before my NEX-7.
